Folks, we’re underway!
The 2021-22 hockey season has begun in earnest in Europe and for the United States Hockey League, so we’re kicking off our weekly dive into how the Calgary Flames’ prospects are faring. Let’s see how the early birds are doing so far!

This and that:

  • Main camp is underway, so many key prospects remain in Calgary.
  • College hockey doesn’t begin until mid-to-late October, depending on the team, so we won’t have Matthew Coronato updates until later on when Harvard begins play.
  • Speaking of college hockey, Josh Nodler was named an alternate captain for Michigan State.
  • The Flames re-assigned several prospects to their junior teams on Saturday: Lucas Ciona (Seattle, WHL), Cole Huckins (Acadie-Bathurst, QMJHL), Cole Jordan (Moose Jaw, WHL), Rory Kerins (Sault Ste. Marie, OHL), Ilya Nikolaev (Tri-City, USHL) and Cameron Whynot (Halifax, QMJHL). Jack Beck was assigned to Ottawa (OHL) when camp began. The Canadian major junior season begins Oct. 1.
  • Lucas Feuk was a healthy scratch for Västerviks IK in their HockeyAllsvenskan season-opener last week. They play MODO again on Wednesday.

Emil Heineman – LW, Leksands IF, SHL

Heineman remains a fixture on Leksands’ third line. He also remains seeking his first point, of any kind, of the season. He’s getting shots on net each game, but nothing’s going in for him (or his linemates) right now.

William Strömgren – LW, Rögle BK, J20 Nationell

Strömgren remains in junior, but he might not be there for too much longer as he’s playing quite well for Rögle. He had a secondary assist and a power play goal, as Rögle won all three games that they played this week.

Arsenii Sergeev – G, Tri-City Storm, USHL

After a good pre-season, Sergeev officially became a USHL goaltender with a 3-2 overtime win in his first USHL start. He’s tandeming with Washington Capitals sixth rounder Chase Clark, so it’s probably reasonable to expect they each get about half of Tri-City’s games unless one of them proves to be much better (or worse) than the other.
