Calgary Flames goaltender Jacob Markström and winger @Andrew Mangiapane combined forces in the second period of Monday’s game against the New York Rangers to help the Flames maintain and grow their lead.
Less than two minutes after the puck dropped to start the middle frame, the Rangers broke into the offensive zone and moved the puck around the Flames’ defenders with a series of crisp passes.
Rangers forward @Sammy Blais received a pass from @Julien Gauthier as he darted past Flames defencemen @Erik Gudbranson and Juuso Välimäki. Blais neatly deflected the puck towards the goal but Markström managed to keep it out with his right pad.
Flames forward @Dillon Dube immediately cleared the puck out of the zone. Just moments later, @Andrew Mangiapane intercepted a breakout pass by Rangers defenceman @Patrik Nemeth at the right face-off circle, spun, and fired the puck past @Igor Shesterkin for his fourth goal of the season.
Here’s the video of the sequence, as posted by the official FlamesNation Twitter account:
No Flames players recorded assists on Mangiapane’s goal, which came at the 2:09 mark of the second period. Calgary currently leads the Rangers by a 2-0 score with less than five minutes remaining in the middle frame.
