The Calgary Flames haven’t made a significant mid-season trade to acquire a player with term in more than a decade.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, “a number of teams” around the NHL expect that could soon change.
Friedman appeared on Wednesday’s edition of The Jeff Marek Show on Sportsnet’s national radio network to discuss the situation currently unfolding around the struggling Montreal Canadiens.
After briefly discussing @Christian Dvorak, Friedman steered the conversation toward another Canadiens forward:
You know who a lot of people think is going to end up in Calgary, potentially? […] There’s a number of teams that are pencilling in @Tyler Toffoli with Calgary, and it makes a ton of sense. They’re looking for secondary scoring, there’s the Darryl Sutter connection. There’s a few teams who think the Flames are going to be in on that one. I think they are in on that kind of player, and there’s a few teams who think the Flames are … put it this way, if you’re asking people to make predictions, and sometimes I do that at this time of year, I get a lot of “Toffoli to Calgary.”
The Habs lost 7–1 to the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday and currently place 32nd in the league. Shortly after Friedman’s radio hit with Marek, the Canadiens reportedly fired head coach Dominique Ducharme.
Toffoli, 29, is in the second season of a four-year UFA deal he signed with the Canadiens in 2020. He has nine goals and 25 points in 34 games with Montreal this year; last year, he managed 28 goals and 44 points in 52 regular-season games before amassing 14 points in 22 playoff contests.
A two-time Stanley Cup champion with Darryl Sutter’s Los Angeles Kings, Toffoli appeared in 515 regular-season games with L.A. and scored 290 points (139 goals, 151 assists). He also briefly played for the Vancouver Canucks during the pandemic-shortened 2019–20 season.
Toffoli has two years remaining after this one under contract at an AAV of $4.25 million. According to PuckPedia, the Flames currently have space to add a player with a cap hit of approximately $2.81 million for the rest of this season; that figure will increase to $5.56 million by the trade deadline (Mar. 21, 2022).
