The Calgary Flames have made a pair of roster moves. General manager Brad Treliving has announced that the club has placed forward Sean Monahan on long-term injury reserve with a season-ending labrum injury. In a transaction related to Oliver Kylington’s day-to-day injury, the Flames have also called up Connor Mackey from the American Hockey League’s Stockton Heat.

Monahan, 27, has faced a lesser role this season as he’s slowed down a bit due to some prior injuries. But as an alternate captain he played a big role in the locker room, and he’s still managed to carve out a role on the club’s second power play unit with his deadly shot from the slot. It’s yet to be seen what Monahan can be once he’s fully recovered from a second hip surgery.
With Kylington out day-to-day after crashing into the boards against Los Angeles, adding Mackey from the AHL gives the Flames seven available defenders and give them the potential to work a promising young blueliner into the mix. As Mackey gets up to speed, it seems likely that Michael Stone will be slotting back into the lineup – per Pat Steinberg, line rushes from Friday had Stone on the second pairing alongside Chris Tanev. Bringing up Mackey burns the first of Calgary’s four non-emergency recalls allowed following the trade deadline.
With the Flames dipping into LTIR, they will have the ability to spend on an LTIR salary pool of approximately $6.278 million (via PuckPedia). In other words: they have a ton of flexibility to bring up young players over the next little while, hamstrung obviously by the recall limit. Calling up Mackey has dropped their available cap space to roughly. $4.375 million.
