It looks like the Calgary Flames could be without one of their top defencemen to start the 2022–23 season.

Chris Tanev, who missed four games during the Flames’ 2022 playoff run before returning for Games 4 and 5 against the Edmonton Oilers, confirmed to reporters on Saturday that he’ll undergo surgery to fix a torn labrum.

Tanev, 32, also played with a dislocated shoulder during the series against the Oilers. He’s expected to miss 4–6 months while recovering from his injuries.

Although previous reports indicated he played through a sprained neck during the playoffs, Tanev refuted that on Saturday. He notched a single assist while averaging 19:34 of ice-time in eight playoff games.

Tanev set new career highs in games played (82), assists (22), and points (28) with the Flames in the 2021–22 regular season. Now, it looks like he might be in tough to play a full 82 games in 2022–23.
