This has been a pretty unique and fascinating year for the Calgary Flames organization.
Against all odds, and defying many expectations, the Flames are within spitting distance of a playoff spot. And they’ve done so despite losing some useful players to injuries, trades and waiver claims. Now, you might expect that when a team graduates some top young players – Matt Coronato and Dustin Wolf have grabbed hold of NHL roster spots, for example – that their farm team would suffer.
But that hasn’t been the case.
So far this season, 11 different players have dressed for both the NHL and AHL clubs. That group includes goaltender Devin Cooley, defencemen Tyson Barrie and Ilya Solovyov, and forwards Dryden Hunt, Rory Kerins, Clark Bishop, Adam Klapka, Walker Duehr, Jakob Pelletier, Sam Honzek and Coronato. Oh, and Flames interim assistant coach/Wranglers head coach Trent Cull. (And we’re willing to bet that group’s membership grows before the Flames season ends.)
If you’re playing well and the Flames have an opening, chances are you’ll get a shot at some point.
Let’s check in with the prospects!
