Just as surely as the 2015-16 season has finished up, we’re about to begin with the 2016-17 hockey calendar. The annual Calgary Flames development camp, a rite of summer for the youngest members of the Flames organization, has just been officially announced by the club and is the first major event of the new hockey year.
The camp runs July 4-7 (this coming Monday through Thursday) at Winsport over at Canada Olympic Park, and the roster features a few fairly big names such as 2012 first round pick Mark Jankowski and 2016 first round pick Matthew Tkachuk.

THE SCHEDULE

The camp is largely the same format as last year, meaning lots of skill development and drills and not a lot of flashy scrimmages. (If you’re a minor hockey coach, it’s a good idea to come down for a day and jot down some drills for your kids to try out.)
  • Monday, July 4 is just fitness testing, with no on-ice activity scheduled.
  • Tuesday, July 5 and Wednesday, July 6 have sessions running at 9am, 10:15am, 11:30am, 1pm and 2:30pm. All are skills development and power skating.
  • Thursday, July 7 is the main event, with a scrimmage scheduled for 9:30am followed by some power skating drills at 11:15am.
All of the action is taking place on the NHL-sized ice surfaces at Winsport, not the big international-sized sheet.

We’ll have a run-down of the 10 camp invitees on Monday for your reading pleasure. It’s a much more diverse group than we’ve seen in the past few years.

      SUM IT UP

If you haven’t been down to a development camp, it’s usually worth heading down for a day or two. You get to see the Flames most recently-drafted prospects up-close, in a much more relaxed atmosphere than you’ll see at training camp.
