On Saturday, we delved into the 20-some players that we can reasonably expect to see suit up for the Calgary Flames at the 2024 Young Stars Classic tournament in Penticton this coming September.
Now, let’s dive into seven players that you shouldn’t expect to see. All of these players are prospects, but their commitments in Europe or collegiate hockey will keep them from playing for the Flames in the rookie tournament.
Let’s dive in.

F Aydar Suniev

A third-round pick in 2023, Suniev spent last season as a freshman with the University of Massachusetts. He’s headed back for his sophomore season and the Minutemen are hoping to return to the NCAA national tournament (and avenge their defeat at the hands of the eventual national champions from Denver). Since Suniev will be in class, he won’t be in Penticton.

F Cade Littler

A seventh-round pick in 2022, Littler has spent his two post-draft seasons in the BCHL (and briefly in the USHL). He de-committed from Northeastern University after their coaching change and is headed to the University of North Dakota for the fall. Since he’ll be in class, he won’t be in Penticton.

F Trevor Hoskin

A fourth-round pick in 2024, Hoskin was drafted as a double-overager… but he was selected coming off an MVP season where he led the Ontario Junior Hockey League in scoring. He’s headed to Niagara University in the fall. Since he’ll be in class, he won’t be in Penticton.

G Arsenii Sergeev

A seventh-round pick ion 2021, Sergeev was the USHL’s top goaltender in 2021-22. He spent two seasons at the University of Connecticut, where he played well but wasn’t able to grab hold of the starting job. He transferred to Penn State University for this coming season. He’ll be in class, so he won’t be in Penticton.

G Yegor Yegorov

A sixth-round pick from 2023, Yegorov spent last season in Russian’s major junior league, the MHL (Molodezhnaya Hokkeinaya Liga), playing with Dynamo Moskva’s junior team, MHK Dynamo Moskva. He’s under contract with Dynamo for 2024-25, and since the Russian season begins in August, he’s otherwise occupied when the Flames are in Penticton.

G Kirill Zarubin

A third-round pick from 2024, Zarubin split last season between Mikhailov Academy’s two junior teams in the MHL: AKM-Junior Tula and AKM Tula. He’s under contract with AKM Tula for 2024-25, so he won’t be in Penticton.

G Daniil Chechelev

A fourth-round pick in 2020, Chechelev spent last year under contract with HC Vityaz in the Kontinental Hockey League. He ended up playing much of the season in the second tier of Russian pro hockey, the VHL (Vserossiyskaya hokkeinaya liga) with Ryazan-VDV.
Chechelev re-upped his deal with HC Vityaz for 2024-25 and seems likely to be Ryazan’s starter. The Flames retain Chechelev’s rights indefinitely because of the lack of a transfer agreement between the NHL and the Russian ice hockey federation, but since Chechelev’s season starts in August he won’t be in Penticton.
