In case we haven’t mentioned it before, the Calgary Flames have quite a few members of their active roster on expiring contracts. Of those individuals, four of them are what we would classify as prominent players that could net the club significant assets if traded before the March 8, 2024 trade deadline.
Flames players represent four of the top five names on Frank Seravalli’s first Trade Targets board of the 2023-24 season over at Daily Faceoff.
The four names mentioned by Seravalli are Elias Lindholm (#1), Chris Tanev (#3), Nikita Zadorov (#4) and Noah Hanifin (#5). Former Flame Sean Monahan is #2 on Frank’s list. No other Flames players appear in the top 20.
Lindholm is a high-end centre with a favourable ($4.85 million) cap hit. Tanev is a heart-and-soul blue who’s a big enough “team” guy that he blocked a shot with his face against Vegas to keep a game tied. Zadorov is a high-risk, high-reward blueliner who plays physical and can score big goals. Hanifin is a really reliable all-around blueliner that can fill in gaps in virtually any lineup.
Are the Flames keeping all four? Are the Flames selling all four? It’s unclear, especially with the Flames in the midst of the Western Conference’s playoff race.
Seravalli summarized the Flames’ situation pretty succinctly: “They aren’t in sell mode yet.”
