This year’s edition of the National Hockey League’s annual awards show will have a bit of a Calgary Flames flavour to the proceedings.
In addition to Jacob Markstrom being a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, the league announced on Thursday that assistant general manager Chris Snow – along with his family – will be one of the presenters at the event.
Snow was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) back in June 2019 and given a year to live. Three years later, he continues to contribute to the Flames as assistant GM – he’s the point person on most contract negotiations and helps integrate information from the data department he built into the hockey operations department’s decision-making – and as an enduring symbol of hope and perseverance.
He and his wife, Kelsie, have become tireless advocates for ALS research and they’ve helped spear-head this year’s Weak Side Strong Challenge fundraising campaign, encouraging everyone on social media to share a video of themselves performing an activity with their non-dominant hand (their “weak side”).
Visit WeakSideStrong.org for more information, or to donate.
Other presenters include Nadia Popovici (a Seattle Kraken fan that noticed a odd mole on a Vancouver Canucks equipment manager’s neck), Red Hamilton (the equipment manager whose life was saved as a result of her keen eye), Jake Thibeault (a Milton Academy hockey player who was paralyzed by an injury last year) and Thomas Hodges (an emergency backup goalie who’s blind in one eye and played in a game for Anaheim this season).
The 2022 NHL Awards take place Tue., June 21 at 5 p.m. MT on Sportsnet.
