A key member of Calgary Flames management has solidified their winter holiday plans. On Wednesday, Hockey Canada announced that Brad Pascall, the Flames’ vice-president of hockey operations and assistant general manager, will serve as co-general manager of Canada’s entry at the Spengler Cup.
Pascall, 53, has been with the Flames since 2014, serving as assistant GM and running the team’s player development apparatus. In that capacity, his most prominent role has been as GM of the organization’s American Hockey League affiliate.
But prior to serving with the Flames, Pascall was a pretty big wheel over at Hockey Canada. We’ll let Hockey Canada summarize his tenure succinctly (via their press release):
Prior to joining the Flames, Pascall was the vice-president of hockey operations and national teams with Hockey Canada for nearly four years (2010-14), and worked for the organization from 1996-2014. During his tenure, he won five-straight gold medals at the IIHF World Junior Championship (2005-09), three Olympic gold medals (2002, 2010, 2014), two IIHF World Championship gold medals (2003, 2004), the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and the 2012 Spengler Cup.
For those unfamiliar, the Spengler Cup is an invitational tournament held every December in Switzerland and hosted by HC Davos. This year’s event features HC Davos and HC Ambri-Piotta (from Switzerland’s National League), Frolunda HC (from the Swedish Hockey League), KalPa (from Finland’s Liiga), HC Dynamo Pardubice (from the Czech Extraliga) and a Hockey Canada entry.
Typically, Hockey Canada’s Spengler Cup team is a hodgepodge of impressive Canadians already playing in Europe and a few standouts from around the AHL. If nothing else, Pascall’s inclusion in the tournament is some nice recognition for the work he’s done with the Flames – the Wranglers have been good –and provides him with a fun Swiss Christmas vacation that can also double as a bit of European scouting for the Flames.
Pascall’s inclusion in Team Canada is a nice counter to Flames GM Craig Conroy’s recent turn as part of USA Hockey’s management team at the 2023 World Championships.
The Spengler Cup takes place Dec. 26-31 in Davos, Switzerland.
