The Calgary Flames took their swing at Taylor Hall and unfortunately, the swing missed.
Rumours have swirled about a potential “hockey trade” the Flames offered the New Jersey Devils for Taylor Hall and now, that deal has come to light.
According to Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek, the Flames offered Noah Hanifin and Sam Bennett in exchange for @Taylor Hall and defenceman @Sami Vatanen, he said on the 31 Thoughts podcast. The deal was reportedly discussed in the middle of the season, however, the Devils liked what the Arizona Coyotes offered up better.
The deal would’ve seen Hall, who has scored 563 points in 627 games winning the Hart Trophy in 2017-18, make a grand homecoming. New Jersey traded Hall to Arizona on Dec. 16, 2019, along with Blake Speers, for Nate Schnarr, Nick Merkley, Kevin Bahl, Arizona’s first-round pick in 2020 and a conditional 3rd in 2021.
Vatanen, meanwhile, would’ve brought some offence to the Flames’ blueline. The 29-year-old right-shot has scored 194 points in 434 games. The Devils held onto the unrestricted free agent through the deadline.
