The Calgary Flames are getting close to their final roster. After trimming their camp roster by six players earlier on Thursday morning, the club has placed defenceman Nick DeSimone and forwards Martin Pospisil and Emilio Pettersen on waivers, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman (and others).
After the earlier roster moves, the Flames were down to 30 players. Three of those players – Oliver Kylington, Jakob Pelletier and Kevin Rooney – will likely begin the season on the injured/non-roster list, which reduces the roster to 27 active players. These three players on waivers will likely be assigned to the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers when/if they clear, reducing the roster to 24 players.
Of the remaining group, Matt Coronato, Cole Schwindt, Adam Klapka and Ilya Solovyov are waiver exempt. If the Flames intend on going with the traditional composition of 2 goalies, seven defencemen and 14 forwards, that leaves Solovyov as the easiest player to send to the AHL.
In other words, it certainly looks like the Flames are just about down to their starting roster.
We’ll have more on the Flames’ opening roster moves later this week.
