One of the Calgary Flames’ college prospects is earning some awards attention at mid-season. Goaltender Arsenii Sergeev, a freshman at the University of Connecticut, has been named one of 41 college goaltenders on the watch list for the Mike Richter Award.
The Mike Richter Award is given out by the Hockey Commissioners Association every year to, quite simply, the best NCAA goaltender. (It’s essentially the goaltender version of the Hobey Baker Award.)
The 20-year-old Sergeev was a seventh-round pick of the Flames (205th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft. He was the USHL’s top goaltender in 2021-22 with the Tri-City Storm, and has played in a tandem at UConn this season with Logan Terness. In 12 NCAA appearances, Sergeev has a 7-3-1 record with a 2.55 goals against average and .918 save percentage. He’s one of five freshmen goaltenders on the Richter Award watch list.
