Calgary Flames prospect update: Jakob Pelletier stays hot this week

2 years agoThe Calgary Flames are a quarter of the way through the 2021-22 regular season. And their prospects are a similar proportion through their respective schedules – those Europeans are a little bit ahead of everybody else, though.
Let’s see how the up-and-coming future Flames have fared this past week, led by some strong performances by recent first-rounders Jakob Pelletier and Matthew Coronato.

- Johannes Kinnvall and Tyler Persons are on the Flames’ season-opening injury reserve after suffering injuries.

Boltmann has settled into a top four role with the Irish. He got his “usual” point per two games. He projects as more of a shutdown defender, but it’s encouraging to see him put up some points consistently this season.

Harvard had most of the week off, so Coronato attended Calgary’s game in Boston against the Bruins. Then he hit the ice on Tuesday night and had a goal and an assist in Harvard’s decisive 5-2 win over those stuffed shirts at Brown.

Francis is starting to find his offensive swagger with the Sea Dogs, scoring at over a point-per-game pace this week. it’s worth noting that he had just a single five-on-five point and is pretty reliant on special teams for production right now. He’s serving as Saint John’s second line centre.

Gawdin’s offensive output is slowing down a little bit – he’s now “only” a point-per-game AHLer – but he remains one of the organization’s most reliable and consistent two-way players.

Heineman had a hat-trick in Leksands’ 8-1 win over KAC Klagenfurt (of Austria) in the Champions League. He was able to play a bigger role in the CHL games than he usually does in the SHL – he was top six in the CHL after being bottom six in the SHL – and he made the most of the opportunity. Leksands will be playing better teams in the next round of the CHL, so we’ll see if Heineman can continue to adjust.

After a bit of a dip in output last week, Kerins produced at a two point per game pace this past week (including a three point evening that saw him score the game-winning goal). As of now, he’s firmly in the OHL’s top 10 in scoring.

Nikolaev continues to be a really nice developmental story. He continues to consistently produce for Tri-City and has quietly worked his way from the fourth line all the way to centring their top unit.

Now a fixture on Michigan State’s top line, Nodler is playing key minutes in basically every game situation. Taking advantage of this opportunity, he’s producing quite reliably. (He projects as a two-way, shutdown centre, but it’s encouraging that he’s moving the needle offensively in a tough conference.)

Pelletier, who turned 20 in March and can’t rent a car without paying a bunch of extra insurance fees, is currently eighth in the AHL in points and is tied with Adam Ruzicka for Stockton’s points lead. (Ruzicka is seventh in the AHL in points because he has more goals.) For a first-rounder in his first year pro, it’s hard to say many negative things about his output thus far.

Philp has developed a reputation as a pro as being a really reliable goal-scorer. He’s continued that momentum this season. He’s not quite an elite offensive talent, but he can play with anybody and is a steady contributor in whatever role the Heat staff give him.

Whynot missed a game with an illness this weekend, and he was otherwise completely fine on Halifax’s second pairing. He had a secondary even strength assist, but so far remains really reliant on special teams to generate offense for the Mooseheads.

Chechelev finally got some game action in, playing this weekend for the first time since playing in a MHL game (Russian junior) in mid-February. He was excellent in a Kansas City win, and then a little less good in a loss. (The Mavericks were playing their third game in as many nights against the same opponent.)

What more can we say about Sergeev? He allowed two goals this week, high by his standards, and was named the USHL’s goaltender of the week for the second time in three weeks. He’s been excellent for Tri-City so far.

Werner played once and allowed five goals in a Stockton regulation loss, their first of the season. The game got away from the Heat collectively in the third period, so you can’t exactly hang it on their goalie.
