This has been an interesting season for goaltenders in the Calgary Flames system. Jacob Markstrom leads the NHL in shutouts. Dustin Wolf has been superb in the AHL as a rookie. Daniil Chechelev has been adapting well in the chaotic ECHL. Arsenii Sergeev has utterly dominated the USHL.
Pretty much all of Calgary’s goaltending prospects had strong performances this past week.

This and that:

  • G Tyler Parsons remains on the Flames’ season-opening injury reserve.
  • We’re not including D Juuso Välimäki’s AHL run in here because he’s played enough NHL games that we no longer consider him a prospect. He has seven points in 11 AHL games and returned from injury last week, only to be suspended for three games for shoving an official during a scrum. He’s served two of his three games so far.
  • F Adam Ruzicka is on the Flames’ main roster.

Jack Beck – RW, Ottawa 67’s, OHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (168th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date1211617915937.52
Change from last week
Beck’s not back from his injury yet, but he’s back practicing with the 67’s for the first time in three months.

Jake Boltmann – D, University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish, NCAA/Big10

Calgary’s third round pick (80th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date2811112107511.70
Change from last week2033311+2.25
Notre Dame swept Penn State in a weekend set, winning by a combined 10-2 score. Boltmann racked up three assists in a single game.

Lucas Ciona – LW, Seattle Thunderbirds, WHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (173rd overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date3613112416201116.51
Change from last week23-12131n/a
Ciona scored three goals this week as Seattle continued a nice little run of play. He also had a prior week’s secondary assist stat-corrected away, but he’s still chugging along nicely as a secondary scorer for the Thunderbirds.

Matthew Coronato – RW, Harvard University Crimson, NCAA/HE

Calgary’s first round pick (13th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; #1-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date211091913171220.77
Change from last week2213131+1.44
Coronato played in his first Beanpot for Harvard. He had a goal and an assist in that game, but the Crimson still lost to Boston University by a single goal. With a pair of older teammates away at the Olympics, Coronato will be counted upon to deliver goals. This week was a fairly good start on that front.

Walker Duehr – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Free agent signing
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date295914711619.24
Change from last week2022121+1.53
Duehr has quietly been a really effective player for Stockton this season. Case in point, this week: he had a pair of primary assists, one of them shorthanded, in a single Stockton victory. 11 of his 14 points are primary points, so while he’s not generating a ton of offense, he’s a pretty key contributor in the goals that are being scored when he’s on the ice.

Lucas Feuk – LW, Västerviks IK, HockeyAllsvenskan / Nybro Vikings IF/Väsby IK, HockeyEttan

Calgary’s fourth round pick (116th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft

HockeyEttan up to date206814997n/a

On one hand, Feuk keeps chugging along and generating points consistently. On the other hand, it’s in the Swedish third tier.

Ryan Francis – C, Stockton Heat, AHL / Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL

Calgary’s fifth round pick (143rd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #8-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
AHL up to date40000000.00
Change from last week
QMJHL up to date216202615201228.83
Change from last week3033333-0.93
Francis had three points in three games, all even strength, as Saint John returned to action.

Glenn Gawdin – C, Stockton Heat, AHL

St. Louis’ fourth round pick (116th overall) in the 2015 NHL Draft; free agent signing; #10-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date3512233518221339.85
Change from last week2033020+1.21
Gawdin had three helpers, but none of them were from even strength play. But hey, points are points, and he remains one of Stockton’s top offensive contributors.

Emil Heineman – LW, Leksands IF, SHL/CHL

Florida’s second round pick (43rd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; acquired via trade; #14-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
SHL up to date341151614151323.00
Change from last week1202222+2.27
CHL up to date9415454n/a
Change from last week
Heineman had two goals, including the game-winner, in an 8-4 Leksands win. For a young player in the SHL, he has emerged as a reliable secondary scorer for his team.

Cole Huckins – LW, Acadie-Bathurst Titan, QMJHL

Calgary’s third round pick (77th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; #19-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date2511122317191321.42
Change from last week1011111+0.06
Huckins had an assist as the Titan began their post-COVID schedule with a modest single game.

Cole Jordan – D, Moose Jaw Warriors, WHL

Calgary’s fifth round pick (141st overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date171454337.28
Change from last week
Jordan missed this week’s games due to injury. He’s listed as week-to-week with a lower body injury.

Rory Kerins – C, Soo Greyhounds, OHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (174th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #18-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date4226477344593946.04
Change from last week3156544+0.54
Man, Kerins is a good junior player. He’s on a seven game point streak, including six multi-point games. When you’re hot, you’re hot, I suppose. He leads the OHL in points right now.

Johannes Kinnvall – D, Stockton Heat, AHL

Free agent signing
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date504411031.88
Change from last week2022000+19.31
In the SHL, Kinnvall was a wholly unremarkable five-on-five player who was really good on the power play. In the AHL, so far, Kinnvall has been a wholly unremarkable five-on-five player who is really good on the power play.

Justin Kirkland – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Nashville’s third round pick (62nd overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft; free agent signing
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date3510717913719.36
Change from last week2011100+0.04
Kirkland chipped in with an assist this week.

Demetrios Koumontzis – LW, Arizona State University Sun Devils, NCAA/Ind.

Calgary’s fourth round pick (108th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date23471198813.06
Change from last week
Koumontzis hasn’t played in a month due to injury.

Yan Kuznetsov – D, Stockton Heat, AHL / Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL

Calgary’s second round pick (50th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #15-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
AHL up to date120000000.00
Change from last week
QMJHL up to date714533218.92
Change from last week3022211-0.94
Kuznetsov hasn’t played a ton of junior hockey, and his adaptation to the QMJHL was disrupted by the COVID stoppage, so it’s a little bit impressive that he’s been so offensively consistent. He returned from the Q’s break with a pair of assists.

Connor Mackey – D, Stockton Heat, AHL

Free agent signing; #7-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date34515201115722.14
Change from last week21-10111-1.30
Mackey had a rollercoaster week. He was returned from Calgary’s taxi squad. He scored a goal! He had a previous secondary assist wiped out by a stat correction. He’s been good and reliable for the Heat this season.

Mitchell Mattson – C, Michigan State University Spartans, NCAA/Big10

Calgary’s fifth round pick (126th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date171122224.82
Change from last week2000000-0.64
Michigan State lost both games they played this week against Minnesota, and have yet to win in 2022. Mattson played both games, but had a previous assist stat-corrected away. So it wasn’t a great week all-around for him.

Ilya Nikolaev – C, Tri-City Storm, USHL

Calgary’s third round pick (88th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date3312273919251327.13
Change from last week2134322+1.21
He’s 20, but Nikolaev is a top-20 scorer in the USHL. Given that he’s played a bit of Russian minor-pro before coming to North America, you would probably expect (or hope) that he’d be playing this well against a younger peer group. He’s a good offensive player on the USHL’s best all-around team.

Josh Nodler – C, Michigan State University Spartans, NCAA/Big10

Calgary’s fifth round pick (150th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date285712510511.70
Change from last week2000000-0.90
Nodler failed to hit the scoresheet, again, and the Spartans remain winless in 2022.

Jakob Pelletier – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s first round pick (26th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft; #3-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date3614223622271639.85
Change from last week2213131+1.17
Pelletier has been good, consistent, and consistently good. He had three primary points, two of which were on the power play, and he’s one of the top AHLers in points both among rookies and for players with tons of pro experience.

Emilio Pettersen – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (167th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft; #11-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date3018985411.96
Change from last week2011100+0.57
Pettersen continues his low-key offensive season. He had a secondary assist.

Matthew Phillips – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (166th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft; #5-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date3418193720301843.37
Change from last week2404040+2.27
Phillips had four goals! Now before you get too excited, two were on the power play and two were into empty nets. (One of those empty netters was also shorthanded.)

Luke Philp – C, Stockton Heat, AHL

Free agent signing
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date351112231116926.19
Change from last week2202121+0.83
Luke Philp, noted goal-scorer since going pro, scored two goals this week. He remains a reliable secondary offensive weapon for the Heat.

Jérémie Poirier – D, Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL

Calgary’s third round pick (72nd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #9-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date3310253525211524.70
Change from last week3123210-0.14
Poirier is an over point-per-game offensive blueliner, and only 10 of his points have been from special teams. His defensive play could still use some refining, but he’s a superb offensive weapon for the Sea Dogs.

Colton Poolman – D, Stockton Heat, AHL

Free agent signing
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date310554116.43
Change from last week2000000-0.44
Poolman had no points this week. (You don’t really expect third pairing AHL defenders to get many points, though.)

Martin Pospisil – C, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s fourth round pick (105th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft; #16-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date276915913822.14
Change from last week2011010-0.18
Pospisil had a power play assist this week.

Adam Ruzicka – C, Stockton Heat, AHL

GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date1310616913949.05

Ruzicka is in the NHL.

Ilya Solovyov – D, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s seventh round pick (205th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #20-ranked prospect

Up to date293365558.25
Change from last week2000000-0.61
Solovyov had no points this week. (You don’t really expect third pairing AHL defenders to get many points, though.)

William Strömgren – LW, Rögle BK, J20 Nationell/CHL/SHL / IF Björklöven, HockeyAllsvenskan

Calgary’s second round pick (45th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; #13-ranked prospect

As noted last week, Stromgren has been double-registered, so he can play with Rogle or with IF Bjorkloven in the secondary HockeyAllsvenskan. He has yet to play a game for Bjorkloven.

Eetu Tuulola – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (156th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date328513811716.19

Cameron Whynot – D, Halifax Mooseheads, QMJHL

Whynot returned to game action on Tuesday after missing a pair of games, presumably due to a minor illness or injury.

Connor Zary – C, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s first round pick (24th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #2-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date2545967514.35

Zary had no points this week.

The KHL season will resume on March 1 and go right into the playoffs. Sochi isn’t one of the top 16 teams, but the KHL has yet to confirm the format of their playoffs so they’re sort of in limbo until things get approved by the KHL’s board.
