The Calgary Flames are having a strong season in the National Hockey League, and so are several of their key prospects. In fact, their primary affiliate in the American Hockey League, the Stockton Heat, are among the top teams in that league too.
The Heat can actually clinch a playoff berth on Wednesday with a win and some help. Otherwise, they might just have to wait until the weekend to punch their Calder Cup playoff ticket.
Let’s check in on how all the Flames’ youngsters fared this week.

This and that

  • He’s not technically a prospect anymore, but D Juuso Valimaki has 12 points in 22 AHL games for Stockton.
  • G Michael McNiven is on Stockton’s roster but hasn’t dressed.
  • The playing seasons are over for F Mitchell Mattson (Michigan State), F Josh Nodler (also Michigan State) and F Demetrios Koumontzis (Arizona State).

Jack Beck – RW, Ottawa 67’s, OHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (168th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date2416143017271733.31
Change from last week2011111-1.60
On one hand, Beck generated fewer than a point per game for the second consecutive week. On the other hand, he still is generating chances and he’s still scoring well over a point per game pace for the full season.
The 67’s are seventh in the OHL’s Eastern Conference, but they’re about 10 points up on the best non-playoff team. They haven’t clinched but they’re in good shape.

Jake Boltmann – D, University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish, NCAA/Big10

Calgary’s third round pick (80th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date381121311869.34
Change from last week2000000-0.25
Boltmann continued a slow offensive stretch of late, cooling off after a strong first half offensively. He emerged as a really solid top four defender for the Irish this season, though his offensive game lacks a bit of consistency.
Notre Dame was eliminated from the Big 10 conference tournament, but they are a contender for an at-large bid to the NCAA national tournament because of their strong overall record.

Lucas Ciona – LW, Seattle Thunderbirds, WHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (173rd overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date4917153220241416.17
Change from last week1000000-0.34
Ciona missed some time this week with an injury of unspecified severity. The Thunderbirds have already clinched a playoff spot.

Matthew Coronato – RW, Harvard University Crimson, NCAA/HE

Calgary’s first round pick (13th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; #1-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date3115142919231721.48
Change from last week3224222+0.98
Coronato came up big for Harvard in their three game series with RPI this past weekend. He scored a game-tying goal to send Game 1 to overtime, set up another to send Game 2 to overtime, and scored another goal in Game 3 as Harvard advanced.
They’re playing Clarkson, Craig Conroy’s alma mater, on Saturday with a trip to Sunday’s ECAC final on the line.

Walker Duehr – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Free agent signing
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date418101811151017.50
Change from last week4202222+0.27
Duehr continues to be a really reliable secondary scorer for Stockton. He chips in a point every few games and rock-solid energy play from the bottom six.

Lucas Feuk – LW, Västerviks IK, HockeyAllsvenskan / Nybro Vikings IF/Väsby IK, HockeyEttan

Calgary’s fourth round pick (116th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Allsvenskan up to date101122116.51
Change from last week
HockeyEttan up to date31111526201815n/a
Change from last week1112222
Feuk had a two point game this week.
The HockeyEttan season is winding down and Vasby is third in Allettan South. Vasby will play in the quarterfinal round, where the eight higher-ranked teams take turns and choose their series opponents. (A few Swedish levels do this, and it’s super wacky and fun.) The playoff selection is this coming Sunday, with the best-of-three quarterfinals beginning on Mar. 22.

Ryan Francis – C, Stockton Heat, AHL / Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL

Calgary’s fifth round pick (143rd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #8-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
AHL up to date40000000.00
Change from last week
QMJHL up to date3310273722311926.11
Change from last week3134242+0.49
Francis had a productive week, capped by a three point game where he had three primary assists – including setting up the game-winning goal late in the third period.
The Sea Dogs are hosting the Memorial Cup and their playoff fate is set, but they’re third in the QMJHL’s Eastern Conference and a shoo-in for the playoffs.

Glenn Gawdin – C, Stockton Heat, AHL

St. Louis’ fourth round pick (116th overall) in the 2015 NHL Draft; free agent signing; #10-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date4612304222261636.39
Change from last week4022010-1.56
Gawdin had a “quiet” week offensively, which dragged him down to just slightly below a point per game in one of the best leagues in the world.

Cole Huckins – LW, Acadie-Bathurst Titan, QMJHL

Calgary’s third round pick (77th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; #19-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date2812132517211320.79
Change from last week
Huckins hasn’t played for the Titan since mid-February and there’s yet to be any official announcement about his status.
The Titan are fourth in the QMJHL’s Eastern Conference and are shoo-ins for the playoffs.

Cole Jordan – D, Moose Jaw Warriors, WHL

Calgary’s fifth round pick (141st overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date261676336.67
Change from last week3022200+1.29
Jordan’s still toiling on Moose Jaw’s third pairing, but there are worse places to be than the third line of a really good team.
The Warriors are fifth in the WHL’s Eastern Conference and a good bet to make the playoffs.

Rory Kerins – C, Soo Greyhounds, OHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (174th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #18-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date5535599451724645.27
Change from last week3246242+0.45
We’re running out of hyperbole to describe how well Kerins is doing this season. He’s good. He’s really good. If you eliminated every secondary point he’s earned this season, he’d have 72 points and be 12th in the league in points. As it stands, he’s third in the league in points.
The Greyhounds are third in the OHL’s Western Conference and are a shoo-in for a playoff spot.

Johannes Kinnvall – D, Stockton Heat, AHL

Free agent signing
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date1207732123.25
Change from last week3011000-3.32
Kinnvall was scratched once. He played three games and generated a secondary power play assist. He’s still adjusting to the AHL.

Justin Kirkland – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Nashville’s third round pick (62nd overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft; free agent signing
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date4714173116231126.29
Change from last week4044131+1.27
Kirkland keeps on doing his thing, and he’s had a really good past couple of months. His production is skewed towards special teams lately, but that’s better than not producing.

Demetrios Koumontzis – LW, Arizona State University Sun Devils, NCAA/Ind.

Calgary’s fourth round pick (108th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date23471198813.06
Change from last week
Koumontzis’ season is over – he missed the last couple months due to injury – but he’s coming back to Arizona State for a fifth season in 2022-23. (The NCAA granted anybody who was playing in the pandemic-addled 2020-21 season an extra year of eligibility.)

Yan Kuznetsov – D, Stockton Heat, AHL / Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL

Calgary’s second round pick (50th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #15-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
AHL up to date120000000.00
Change from last week
QMJHL up to date1926866511.15
Change from last week1000000-0.62
Kuznetsov missed two of Saint John’s three games due to injury.

Connor Mackey – D, Stockton Heat, AHL

Free agent signing; #7-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date47526311419826.29
Change from last week3044121+1.84
Mackey had a productive week offensively. Then he missed Monday’s game, as he was called up by the Flames. (He has since returned to Stockton.)

Ilya Nikolaev – C, Tri-City Storm, USHL

Calgary’s third round pick (88th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date4317365327331628.30
Change from last week2437453+2.54
Nikolaev’s “bad” game this week involved three points. Tri-City clinched a playoff spot, becoming the first USHL team to do so this season.

Jakob Pelletier – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s first round pick (26th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft; #3-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date4822264829362239.85
Change from last week4617464+2.72
Stockton had a strong week and a lot of that was driven by Pelletier, who had six goals this week. He’s still only 20.

Emilio Pettersen – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (167th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft; #11-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date428101816141017.08
Change from last week4314341+2.40
Pettersen’s gotten hot offensively lately and his scoring streak continued this week with three goals in four outings.

Matthew Phillips – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (166th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft; #5-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date4621295029382443.32
Change from last week4112211-2.23
Phillips was quiet, by his standards, this week with “only” two points. His line remained strong, though.

Luke Philp – C, Stockton Heat, AHL

Free agent signing
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date4718133117231526.29
Change from last week4101111-1.51
Philp chipped in with a single goal this week.

Jérémie Poirier – D, Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL

Calgary’s third round pick (72nd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #9-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date4711334432261821.80
Change from last week3011010-0.96
Poirier slipped below his usual point-per-game scoring pace with just a single assist.

Colton Poolman – D, Stockton Heat, AHL

William Strömgren – LW, Rögle BK, J20 Nationell/CHL/SHL / IF Björklöven, HockeyAllsvenskan

Stromgren played a single game this week, but he had an assist. He’s playing top six minutes for Rogle’s junior side right now. The second half of their season is done now (they finished eighth). Their playoff opponent has yet to be determined.

Eetu Tuulola – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (156th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date421171813151117.08
Change from last week4314444+2.40
Tuulola had a strong week with four five-on-five primary points. For somebody who plays in the bottom six, that’s excellent.

Cameron Whynot – D, Halifax Mooseheads, QMJHL

Calgary’s third round pick (89th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date3841317911610.42
Change from last week3000000-0.89
Whynot played in every game but didn’t hit the scoresheet.
The Mooseheads are fifth in the QMJHL’s Eastern Conference and are safe bets for the playoffs.

Connor Zary – C, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s first round pick (24th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #2-ranked prospect
