Calgary Flames prospect update: three cheers for Rory Kerins

By Ryan Pike
1 year agoThere have been a few consistently positive stories surrounding the Calgary Flames this season. While the Stockton Heat have been one of them, we cannot forget the excellence of young Rory Kerins. After missing out on the entire 2020-21 season (aside from a handful of games with Stockton), Kerins has utterly dominated the Ontario Hockey League.
Let’s check out how Kerins, and the other Flames youngsters, fared over the past week or so.
This and that:
- G Tyler Parsons remains on the Flames’ season-opening injury reserve.
- We’re not including D Juuso Välimäki’s AHL run in here because he’s played enough NHL games that we no longer consider him a prospect. He has seven points in 11 AHL games and returned from injury last week, only to be suspended for three games for shoving an official during a scrum.
- F Adam Ruzicka is on the Flames’ main roster. D Connor Mackey is on the Flames’ taxi squad.
Jack Beck – RW, Ottawa 67’s, OHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (168th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

Beck remains injured. Last word was he was close, but generally still “upper-body, week-to-week.”
Jake Boltmann – D, University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish, NCAA/Big10
Calgary’s third round pick (80th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 26 | 1 | 8 | 9 | 8 | 5 | 4 | 9.45 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.79 |
Boltmann was held off the scoresheet in a pair of games this weekend. Notre Dame earned a split with highly-ranked Minnesota, though.
Lucas Ciona – LW, Seattle Thunderbirds, WHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (173rd overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 34 | 10 | 12 | 22 | 15 | 17 | 10 | 16.51 |
Change from last week | 3 | 2 | 2 | 4 | 1 | 4 | 1 | +2.13 |
The good news is Ciona is on a point streak! The bad news is a few of his points came in games that were absolute laughers, games where Ciona was one of several players picking points in a Thunderbirds blowout win. Still, it’s better than not getting any points, right?
Matthew Coronato – RW, Harvard University Crimson, NCAA/HE
Calgary’s first round pick (13th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; #1-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 19 | 8 | 8 | 15 | 12 | 14 | 11 | 19.33 |
Change from last week | 3 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 1 | -0.76 |
Coronato had a couple of goals and Harvard had a good week! They beat Colgate and Boston College, and beat Cornell in a shootout (though for standings purposes it was a tie, since shootouts don’t count). With Harvard short a pair of veterans, as they’re at the Olympics, the next few weeks will be a big chance for Coronato to drive the bus offensively for the Crimson.
Walker Duehr – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 27 | 5 | 7 | 12 | 6 | 9 | 5 | 17.71 |
Change from last week | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.68 |
Duehr registered zero points in Stockton’s lone game.
Lucas Feuk – LW, Västerviks IK, HockeyAllsvenskan / Nybro Vikings IF/Väsby IK, HockeyEttan
Calgary’s fourth round pick (116th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Allsvenskan up to date | 10 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 6.51 |

HockeyEttan up to date | 17 | 5 | 7 | 12 | 8 | 8 | 6 | n/a |
Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | – |
Feuk had a goal in Sweden’s third division. He’s been pretty productive for Väsby, for whatever that’s worth.
Ryan Francis – C, Stockton Heat, AHL / Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL
Calgary’s fifth round pick (143rd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #8-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
AHL up to date | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0.00 |

QMJHL up to date | 18 | 6 | 17 | 23 | 12 | 17 | 9 | 29.76 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
The QMJHL is still paused, but Saint John returns on Friday.
Glenn Gawdin – C, Stockton Heat, AHL
St. Louis’ fourth round pick (116th overall) in the 2015 NHL Draft; free agent signing; #10-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 33 | 12 | 20 | 32 | 18 | 20 | 13 | 38.64 |
Change from last week | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 | +0.03 |
Gawdin had the primary assist on Matthew Phillips’ shorthanded game-winning goal against Ontario.
Emil Heineman – LW, Leksands IF, SHL/CHL
Florida’s second round pick (43rd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; acquired via trade; #14-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
SHL up to date | 33 | 9 | 5 | 14 | 12 | 13 | 11 | 20.73 |

CHL up to date | 9 | 4 | 1 | 5 | 4 | 5 | 4 | n/a |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Leksands had an unexpected weekend off, as both of their games were postponed due to COVID issues with their opponents.
Cole Huckins – LW, Acadie-Bathurst Titan, QMJHL
Calgary’s third round pick (77th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; #19-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 24 | 11 | 11 | 22 | 16 | 18 | 12 | 21.35 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
The QMJHL is still paused, but Acadie-Bathurst returns on Saturday.
Cole Jordan – D, Moose Jaw Warriors, WHL
Calgary’s fifth round pick (141st overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 17 | 1 | 4 | 5 | 4 | 3 | 3 | 7.28 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Jordan missed this week’s games due to an injury. He’s listed on the WHL’s weekly report as “lower-body, week-to-week” and there are no indications if this is related to his prior lower-body injury from earlier this season.
Rory Kerins – C, Soo Greyhounds, OHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (174th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #18-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 39 | 25 | 42 | 67 | 39 | 55 | 35 | 45.50 |
Change from last week | 3 | 3 | 4 | 7 | 5 | 6 | 5 | +1.36 |
After flirting with the top spot basically all season, Kerins had a heck of a week and moved into first spot in the OHL’s scoring race. He’s had a truly excellent season.
Johannes Kinnvall – D, Stockton Heat, AHL
Free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 3 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 12.57 |
Change from last week | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | +2.64 |
Kinnvall’s still adapting to North American hockey and he has a small sample size. But hey, two points in three games for somebody who’s been on the shelf since September is pretty good, eh?
Justin Kirkland – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Nashville’s third round pick (62nd overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft; free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 33 | 10 | 6 | 16 | 8 | 13 | 7 | 19.32 |
Change from last week | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.61 |
Kirkland registered zero points in Stockton’s lone game.
Demetrios Koumontzis – LW, Arizona State University Sun Devils, NCAA/Ind.
Calgary’s fourth round pick (108th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 23 | 4 | 7 | 11 | 9 | 8 | 8 | 13.06 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Koumontzis is injured.
Yan Kuznetsov – D, Stockton Heat, AHL / Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL
Calgary’s second round pick (50th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #15-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

Connor Mackey – D, Stockton Heat, AHL
Free agent signing; #7-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

Mackey is on the Flames’ taxi squad.
Mitchell Mattson – C, Michigan State University Spartans, NCAA/Big10

Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Michigan State was off this week.
Ilya Nikolaev – C, Tri-City Storm, USHL
Calgary’s third round pick (88th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 31 | 11 | 24 | 35 | 16 | 23 | 11 | 25.92 |
Change from last week | 2 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | -0.21 |
Nikolaev had a power play goal and an overtime game-winner for Tri-City. His NHLe actually dipped down slightly, which speaks to how productive he’s been this season. (But yeah, we notice that more than half of his points come on special teams, too.)
Josh Nodler – C, Michigan State University Spartans, NCAA/Big10
Calgary’s fifth round pick (150th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 26 | 5 | 7 | 12 | 5 | 10 | 5 | 12.60 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Michigan State was off this week.
Jakob Pelletier – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s first round pick (26th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft; #3-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 34 | 12 | 21 | 33 | 21 | 24 | 15 | 38.68 |
Change from last week | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -1.17 |
Pelletier registered zero points in Stockton’s lone game. He’s still among the top offensive players in the entire AHL (at age 20) despite this quiet week. And his quiet “week” is more like a quiet single game.
Emilio Pettersen – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (167th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft; #11-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 28 | 1 | 7 | 8 | 7 | 5 | 4 | 11.39 |
Change from last week | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.42 |
Pettersen registered zero points in Stockton’s lone game.
Over at Postmedia, Wes Gilbertson profiled Pettersen.
Matthew Phillips – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (166th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft; #5-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 32 | 14 | 19 | 33 | 20 | 26 | 18 | 41.10 |
Change from last week | 1 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 | -0.04 |
In typical Phillips fashion, he had a key goal for the Heat. This time, it was a shorthanded marker that stood as the game-winner against Ontario.
Luke Philp – C, Stockton Heat, AHL
Free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

Philp had himself a nice week, with the game-opening goal against Ontario and a stat correction assist added from a prior week.
Jérémie Poirier – D, Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL
Calgary’s third round pick (72nd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #9-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

Strömgren had himself an eventful week. He set up the game-tying goal and then the game-winning overtime goal for Rögle’s junior team. Then he was called up to the SHL for a COVID-ravaged senior team. Then the following day, the pro side’s season was paused due to that COVID outbreak.
He has subsequently been double-registered with IF Bjorkloven in the second-tier HockeyAllsvenskan, so he can move freely between Rogle and Bjorkloven for the remainder of the season.
Eetu Tuulola – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL
