As the Calgary Flames continue their pursuit of a Pacific Division regular season crown, the same thing is happening down in the American Hockey League. Not only are the Stockton Heat battling the Ontario Reign for the top spot in their division, but whoever comes out on top there could clinch bragging rights as the top team in the entire AHL.
As you’ll see, Stockton’s sustained success is being driven by a lot of strong performances by the Flames organization’s best and brightest young faces.

This and that

  • The playing seasons are over for F Mitchell Mattson (Michigan State), F Josh Nodler (also Michigan State), F Demetrios Koumontzis (Arizona State), D Jake Boltmann (Notre Dame) and F Matt Coronato (Harvard).

Jack Beck – RW, Ottawa 67’s, OHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (168th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft

Beck had a productive week, with four points (all at even strength). Despite missing a good chunk of his season with an injury, he’s among the 67’s top point-getters.

Jake Boltmann – D, University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish, NCAA/Big10

Calgary’s third round pick (80th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft

Notre Dame lost to Minnesota State in their regional final, and their season is over.

Lucas Ciona – LW, Seattle Thunderbirds, WHL

Ciona remains out with an injury.

Matt Coronato – RW, Harvard University Crimson, NCAA/ECAC

GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date3418183624282024.31

Coronato hit the scoresheet against the powerhouse Minnesota State team in Harvard’s regional semi-final appearance, but they were ousted. Per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, his representatives are expected to chat with the Flames about his future, but it sounds like he’s staying in school for his sophomore season.

Walker Duehr – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Duehr was held off the scoresheet this week.

Lucas Feuk – LW, Västerviks IK, HockeyAllsvenskan / Nybro Vikings IF/Väsby IK, HockeyEttan

Vasby has advanced to the HockeyEttan semi-finals: there are six best-of-three series, with the six winners playing in a round robin for a spot in the second-tier HockeyAllsvenskan next season. Vasby is up 1-0 in that best-of-three semi-final against Vimmerby HC.

Ryan Francis – C, Stockton Heat, AHL / Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL

Calgary’s fifth round pick (143rd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #8-ranked prospect

QMJHL up to date3917304729412628.07
Change from last week3325454+0.90
Francis has been playing well offensively of late, and he continued his hot streak. He had one game where he was held off the scoresheet, but that was sandwiched between a three-point game and a two-goal game.

Glenn Gawdin – C, Stockton Heat, AHL

St. Louis’ fourth round pick (116th overall) in the 2015 NHL Draft; free agent signing; #10-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date5213324522281634.49
Change from last week2112020+0.22
Gawdin scored a shorthanded goal and set up a shorthanded goal this week.

Cole Huckins – LW, Acadie-Bathurst Titan, QMJHL

Calgary’s third round pick (77th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; #19-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date2812132517211320.79
Change from last week
Huckins hasn’t played since Feb. 13. He’s listed on game sheets by the team as a healthy scratch.
Friend of the site Patrick McNeil (who’s the play-by-play voice of the Cape Breton Eagles) got an update on Huckins from the Titan GM earlier this week:

Cole Jordan – D, Moose Jaw Warriors, WHL

Calgary’s fifth round pick (141st overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date291787336.83
Change from last week2011100+0.64
Jordan got an assist in a blowout win for the Warriors. He got no points in a blowout loss for the Warriors.

Rory Kerins – C, Soo Greyhounds, OHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (174th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #18-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date61396310256795144.29
Change from last week3314333-0.46
Kerins became the second player in the OHL to hit the 100 point mark over the weekend. We’re running out of superlatives to describe how well his season is going. Let’s just say this: he’s really, really good at junior hockey.

Johannes Kinnvall – D, Stockton Heat, AHL

Free agent signing
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date1307732121.46
Change from last week
Kinnvall was scratched for both of Stockton’s games this week. He’s sat out the last five games.

Justin Kirkland – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Nashville’s third round pick (62nd overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft; free agent signing
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date5316203619281427.07
Change from last week2123131+1.28
Kirkland continues to be a really steady contributor for the Heat recently. He had three primary points, two of them on the power play.

Yan Kuznetsov – D, Stockton Heat, AHL / Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL

Calgary’s second round pick (50th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #15-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
AHL up to date120000000.00
Change from last week
QMJHL up to date1926866511.15
Change from last week
Kuznetsov remains out with a lower-body injury.

Connor Mackey – D, Stockton Heat, AHL

Free agent signing; #7-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date52531361620827.59
Change from last week2033100+1.29
Mackey’s production is skewed towards power play assists lately. But that’s better than not generating any offense at all. He’s been a fixture on the Heat’s top pairing all season.

Ilya Nikolaev – C, Tri-City Storm, USHL

Calgary’s third round pick (88th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date4820406031392028.70
Change from last week2213131+0.25
Nikolaev had a fairly typical week by his standards, with three points (two on the power play) as Tri-City keeps rolling along atop the USHL standings. He’s not the primary driver of his team’s offense, but he’s somebody who can play with play-drivers and bury the chances that they generate for him.

Jakob Pelletier – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s first round pick (26th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft; #3-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date5426295530412340.59
Change from last week2112020-0.03
Pelletier had a shorthanded goal and a shorthanded assist this week. (In case you’re wondering: he set up Gawdin’s shortie, while Gawdin set up his.)

Emilio Pettersen – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (167th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft; #11-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date479122119151317.81
Change from last week1112211+1.35
Pettersen missed a game due to a non-COVID illness, but he’s continuing a really nice stretch of hockey with an offensive outburst after being in more of a defensive role this season.

Matthew Phillips – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (166th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft; #5-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date5225335834452844.45
Change from last week2011111-0.98
Noted poor offensive player Phillips lived down to expectations with “just” a primary assist this week. Despite this quiet week, he remains one of the top offensive contributors on any team in the AHL.

Luke Philp – C, Stockton Heat, AHL

Free agent signing
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date5321183921291829.33
Change from last week2314131+1.98
Philp has been on a bit of a heater over the last little bit and it continued this week. His goal-scoring prowess pushed him over the 20 goal mark for the second time in three seasons – last season really shouldn’t count due to how short it was, though. I wouldn’t be shocked if Philp got an NHL look after the Flames clinch.

Jérémie Poirier – D, Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL

Calgary’s third round pick (72nd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #9-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date5313354833291921.09
Change from last week3101010-0.80
Poirier had a quiet offensive week, by his standards, and has fallen off his previous point-per-game scoring pace. He’s tied for fifth in points among QMJHL defencemen, though.

Colton Poolman – D, Stockton Heat, AHL

Free agent signing
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date49011119448.95
Change from last week2011100+0.47
Poolman generated an assist this week. He’s playing on Stockton’s third pairing.

Martin Pospisil – C, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s fourth round pick (105th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft; #16-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date35712191111921.63
Change from last week2022110+1.10
Pospisil’s season has been derailed a couple times by injuries and/or illness, but he had a couple assists this past week. Hopefully it’s a sign that he’s back on track, because he seems like a Darryl Sutter player: big, skilled and someone who can really agitate the opposition when he’s on his game.

Adam Ruzicka – C, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s fourth round pick (109th overall) in the 2017 NHL Draft; #6-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date15108181114147.82
Change from last week
Ruzicka missed this weekend’s games with a non-COVID illness.

Ilya Solovyov – D, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s seventh round pick (205th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #20-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date443365555.43
Change from last week1000000-0.13
Solovyov played once, didn’t get a point, and then was a healthy scratch when Andy Welinski finally returned from his injury.

William Strömgren – LW, Rögle BK, J20 Nationell/CHL/SHL / IF Björklöven, HockeyAllsvenskan

Calgary’s second round pick (45th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; #13-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
SHL up to date60000000.00

It’s not reflected in the above table (that’s for regular season production), but Stromgren had two points as Rogle advanced to the second round of the J20 Nationell playoffs with two straight wins in their best-of-three series. They play HV71 in the next round.

Eetu Tuulola – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (156th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date4811102115171317.44
Change from last week2011000+0.11
Tuulola had a power play assist this week playing in Stockton’s bottom six.

Cameron Whynot – D, Halifax Mooseheads, QMJHL

Calgary’s third round pick (89th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date434131791169.21
Change from last week2000000-0.45
Whynot was held off the scoresheet this week.

Connor Zary – C, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s first round pick (24th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #2-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date439122114171319.46
Change from last week2112222+0.99
Zary had a slow offensive start to the season and has had to battle through injuries, but his two points this week continue a really nice second half to his season thus far.

Dmitry Zavgorodniy – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL / HC Sochi, KHL

Calgary’s seventh round pick (198th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft

Zavgorodniy was a healthy scratch for Stockton this weekend.

Daniil Chechelev – G, Stockton Heat, AHL / Kansas City Mavericks, ECHL

Calgary’s fourth round pick (96th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft

The Mavericks were off this week.

Arsenii Sergeev – G, Tri-City Storm, USHL

Calgary’s seventh round pick (205th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GPTOISV%
Up to date351988.924
Change from last week160+.001
Sergeev is splitting starts with Tri-City’s backup goalie – a good plan given he’s off to college this season. Sergeev allowed one goal in a win. He’s the runaway statistical leader in the USHL in virtually every goaltending category.

Adam Werner – G, Stockton Heat, AHL

Colorado’s fifth round pick (131st overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft; free agent signing
GPTOISV%
Up to date181006.880
Change from last week160-.004
Werner started once and picked up the win in a bit of a track meet: he allowed five goals, driving his save percentage down to just .880, but Stockton scored seven goals so he won.

Dustin Wolf – G, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s seventh round pick (214th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #4-ranked prospect
GPTOISV%
Up to date382267.925
Change from last week160+.001
Wolf started once and picked up the win in a rather simple game where he allowed one goal. He’s among the statistical leaders in the AHL for most goaltending categories – and he’s the outright leader in wins.
