It’s been an interesting year for many of the Calgary Flames prospects. Some have excelled, like Rory Kerins, Dustin Wolf, Jakob Pelletier and a few others. Some have struggled at times, like Emilio Pettersen and Lucas Feuk. Heck, some have done both: Jack Beck was one of the top OHL scorers before his injury.
Let’s check in on the Flames’ youngsters and see who’s experiencing triumphs and who’s experiencing struggles this week.

This and that:

  • G Tyler Parsons remains on the Flames’ season-opening injury reserve.
  • We’re not including D Juuso Välimäki’s AHL run in here because he’s played enough NHL games that we no longer consider him a prospect. He has seven points in 10 AHL games and missed this week’s games with an injury.
  • F Adam Ruzicka is on the Flames’ main roster. D Connor Mackey is on the Flames’ taxi squad.

Jack Beck – RW, Ottawa 67’s, OHL

Beck is expected back from his injury before the end of January.

Jake Boltmann – D, University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish, NCAA/Big10

GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date2418985410.24

Notre Dame had a big weekend, beating Boston College. Boltmann was held off the scoresheet, though.

Lucas Ciona – LW, Seattle Thunderbirds, WHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (173rd overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date31810181413914.38
Change from last week3314332+2.00
Ciona had a pair of multi-point games this week, including one where he scored twice. He nearly doubled his season’s goal output this week, which is (a) impressive and (b) kind of tells you the type of season he’s been having to this point.

Matthew Coronato – RW, Harvard University Crimson, NCAA/HE

Calgary’s first round pick (13th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; #1-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe

Harvard played just one game this week, getting shut out by RIT.

Feuk had an assist. He’s been a pretty productive player in Sweden’s third division, albeit one doesn’t drive five-on-five scoring very much.

Ryan Francis – C, Stockton Heat, AHL / Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL

Calgary’s fifth round pick (143rd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #8-ranked prospect

Cole Huckins – LW, Acadie-Bathurst Titan, QMJHL

Calgary’s third round pick (77th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; #19-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date2411112216181221.35
Change from last week
The QMJHL is on a COVID pause.

Cole Jordan – D, Moose Jaw Warriors, WHL

Calgary’s fifth round pick (141st overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date171454337.28
Change from last week4022211+1.57
Jordan played four games this week – Moose Jaw crammed some COVID postponements into their schedule – and Jordan had a couple of assists. Granted, they were assists in very one-sided Warriors wins, but they’re still better than zero assists.

Rory Kerins – C, Soo Greyhounds, OHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (174th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #18-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date3622386034493044.14
Change from last week2022020-1.04
As per usual, Kerins had a rock-solid offensive week with a point-per-game performance. It sounds like a broken record, but he’s been consistently productive and ranks among the top offensive performers in all of Canadian major junior hockey.

Johannes Kinnvall – D, Stockton Heat, AHL

Free agent signing
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date201101019.93
Change from last week2011010+19.93
After suffering an injury in September and then recovering and rehabbing it, Kinnvall finally debuted in North America. By all accounts he was pretty good, registering an assist on a game-winning goal in his first NHL game.

Justin Kirkland – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Nashville’s third round pick (62nd overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft; free agent signing
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date3210616813719.93
Change from last week3303333+2.07
Kirkland had games of zero, one and two goals. He’s shooting 10.8% this season overall, so while this was an impressive week – averaging a goal per game is top notch – this week was more or less his shooting percentage normalizing.

Demetrios Koumontzis – LW, Arizona State University Sun Devils, NCAA/Ind.

Calgary’s fourth round pick (108th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe

GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date151233225.46
Change from last week2000000-0.84
Fourth line centre Mattson played two games but registered zero points.

Ilya Nikolaev – C, Tri-City Storm, USHL

Calgary’s third round pick (88th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date299243316211126.13
Change from last week2044242+1.47
Nikolaev played twice, registering games of one and three assists. He’s one of the better players on the USHL’s best team. (Granted, he’s 20 and played minor pro in Russia last season, but it’s still impressive.)

Josh Nodler – C, Michigan State University Spartans, NCAA/Big10

Calgary’s fifth round pick (150th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date265712510512.60
Change from last week2000000-1.05

GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date3312213321241539.85
Change from last week3112121-1.33
Pelletier had two points this week to remain in the top 10 in AHL scoring. He leads Stockton in points, but Matthew Phillips has more points-per-game.

Emilio Pettersen – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (167th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft; #11-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date2717875411.81
Change from last week3011111+0.20
Pettersen continues to have a really quiet season offensively. He tallied just a single assist this week.

Matthew Phillips – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s sixth round pick (166th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft; #5-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date3113193220251841.14
Change from last week3022010-1.56
It was a quiet week by Phillips’ standards with just a pair of assists. Pelletier has more points than him, but Phillips has the points-per-game edge.

GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe
Up to date246814912823.25
Change from last week3112121+0.48
Pospisil’s offensive output has been sporadic this season, exemplified by his performance this week: a two point game breaking up an otherwise quiet offensive stretch fro him.

Adam Ruzicka – C, Stockton Heat, AHL

Calgary’s fourth round pick (109th overall) in the 2017 NHL Draft; #6-ranked prospect
GPGAP5v5 PP15v5 P1NHLe

Chechelev got lit up this weekend. The big culprit was a game where Kansas City got lit up for nine goals by the Newfoundland Growlers. (Don’t take his numbers to heart, the ECHL is very “defense-optional”.)

Arsenii Sergeev – G, Tri-City Storm, USHL

Wolf played on back to back nights. The bad news is he gave up five goals in those two games (combined), but he also registered a win and an overtime loss. Statistically, he remains one of the top goaltenders in the AHL.
