The Calgary Flames have made their third addition at the 2023 NHL Draft. With their third-round pick, 80th overall, the Flames have selected forward Aydar Suniev from the British Columbia Hockey League’s Penticton Vees.
Suniev was ranked 102nd by FC Hockey and was the 40th ranked North American skater by the NHL’s Central Scouting Service.
Suniev is a left shot winger originally from Kazan, Russia, listed at 6’2″ and 192 pounds. He had 45 goals and 90 points in 50 games last season with the Vees. He’s committed to the University of Massachusetts for the coming season. He’s played in North America since he was 14, coming over without any family to live with billets and originally speaking no English.
Over at Canucks Army, our pal Chris Faber offered this assessment of Suniev:
Suniev is 6’2″ and has some weight to him as well. He skates around defenders on rushes with a lot of confidence and doesn’t seem worried that anyone can knock him off of the puck. He’s got a good combination of size with skill because he is a magician with the puck in tight around the crease. We’re still cautious because this BCHL competition can be sus at times, to say the best.
