The Calgary Flames have made their second addition at the 2023 NHL Draft. With their second round pick, 48th overall, the Flames have selected defenceman Etienne Morin from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Moncton Wildcats.
Morin was ranked 33rd by FC Hockey and was the 19th ranked North American skater by the NHL’s Central Scouting Service.
A March 2005 birthday, Morin is a product of Valleyfield, Quebec, and is listed at 6’0″ and 183 pounds. He’s a left shot blueliner, whose calling card is offensive hockey. In his second season in the Q, 2022-23, he had 72 points in 67 games with Moncton, including 51 assists, and was tied for the team lead in points. He had one assist in three games for Canada at the men’s Under-18 World Championships.
Here’s a quick description from Elite Prospects:
Morin is a very physical defender, throwing hits all game long. He’s a skilled shooter off the point alongside a bit of activation. He has creative breakout ideas, using a double cut to escape pressure, drawing incoming pressure to pass through it, and completing quick possession plays through multiple forecheckers
If you like Jeremie Poirier’s offensive skill-set, Morin is considered to be somewhat of the same ilk. Morin’s game is thought to be a bit more well-rounded, with perhaps a lower offensive ceiling than Poirier.
