After adding Matthew Coronato to the fold on Friday night, the Calgary Flames are putting the coffee on for what’s sure to be a marathon second day of the annual NHL entry draft.
Follow along starting at 9 a.m. MT on Sportsnet’s national feeds and Sportsnet 960 The Fan!

Picks

The Flames begin the day with six picks at their disposal:
  • 2nd round, 45th overall
  • 3rd round, 77th overall
  • 3rd round, 84th overall [from Edmonton]
  • 5th round, 141st overall
  • 6th round, 173rd overall
  • 7th round, 205th overall

So who’s left?

31 players were selected on Tuesday, including quite a few that were way off most draft lists… just like last year’s draft! Here are the the 15 best remaining players on Bob McKenzie’s draft ranking:
  • 23rd: C Francesco Pinelli
  • 24th: RW Nikita Chibrikov
  • 26th: D Daniil Chayka
  • 27th: C Logan Stankoven
  • 28th: C Aatu Raty
  • 30th: RW Samu Tuomaala
  • 32nd: RW Simon Robertsson
  • 36th: LW Sasha Pastujov
  • 37th: D Scott Morrow
  • 38th: RW Prokhor Poltapov
  • 39th: D Jack Peart
  • 41st: LW William Stromgren
  • 43rd: C Tristan Broz
  • 44th: C Samuel Helenius
  • 45th: D Olen Zellweger
The Flames have the 13th selection in the second round. Barring anything weird going on – or perhaps a trade – they seem in a good position to add another good player to their prospect mix.

Under-23 depth

The Flames have the following players who are below the age of 23 (as of Sept. 15, 2021) on their reserve list right now:
  • Forwards (14): Matthew Coronato (18), Lucas Feuk (20), Ryan Francis (19), Emil Heineman (19), Rory Kerins (19), Demetrios Koumontzis (21), Ilya Nikolayev (20), Josh Nodler (20), Jakob Pelletier (20), Emilio Pettersen (21), Martin Pospisil (21), Adam Ruzicka (22), Connor Zary (19) and Dmitry Zavgorodniy (20)
  • Defensemen (5): Jake Boltmann (19), Yan Kuznetsov (19), Jeremie Poirier (19), Ilya Solovyov (20) and Juuso Valimaki (22)
  • Goaltenders (2): Daniil Chechelev (20) and Dustin Wolf (20)
For the curious, as of this morning, the Flames only have four players in their system who are eligible (age-wise) to play in this winter’s World Juniors: Coronato (USA), Kerins (Canada), Kuznetsov (Russia) and Poirier (Canada). Expect that number to (at least) double before the end of today.
