Next week, Calgary Flames prospects and invitees descend upon Winsport for the team’s annual development camp. The camp allows Flames fans their first look at many of the team’s best and brightest, including the 2012 draft class. All of the club’s 2012 draft picks will be in attendance for the five-day camp, but there are also several notable camp invitees and a handful of prospects that won’t be in attendance.
Notables who are CBA eligible to attend the camp but aren’t on the roster include forwards Roman Cervenka, Lance Bouma, Bryan Cameron, Mitch Wahl, Bill Arnold and Nick Larson, and defenseman T.J. Brodie. It should be noted that all of these guys save for Cervenka have attended these camps in the past, most of them twice.
Meanwhile, the Flames continue to go hard with NCAA players for these camps. Twelve players are invited to the camp, including seven from the NCAA and one from the USHL.
  • Goalie Dan Bakala: Calgary-born netminder currently playing at Bemidji State University
  • Goalie Jared Coreau: Perth, Ontario product playing for Northern Michigan University; posted a great 2.22 GAA last season
  • Defenseman Connor Hardowa: Edmonton-born blueliner playing for Hockey East’s University of New Hampshire. Previously played for Spruce Grove in the AJHL
  • Centre Eric Robinson: Foxboro, Mass product; playing for Dartmouth College, scored 24 points in 33 games last season
  • Right wing Carter Rowney: Sexsmith, Alberta born, played junior for the Grande Prairie Storm, had 33 points in 42 games last season for the University of North Dakota
  • Right wing Tim Schaller: New Hampshire boy, playing for Providence College; had 21 points in 26 games last season
  • Winger Garrett Thompson: a Michigan native playing for Ferris State
  • Winger Frank Vatrano: another Mass boy, he scored 18 points in 24 games for the U.S. National Development Team, but was passed over in the draft.
Joining these guys are four players from other junior teams, including:
  • Ottawa 67s blueliner Sean Callaghan, who had 5 points in 61 games last season
  • Moncton Wildcats forward Ross Johnston, who made the team as an injury call-up mid-way through the season and stuck around
  • Erie Otters forward John McGuire, who amassed 163 penalty minutes last season in 48 games.
  • Penticton Vees foward Wade Murphy, who notched 91 points in 60 games in the BCHL
Murphy is perhaps the most interesting name here. He garnered just 16 points as a rookie for Victoria the year before and then exploded for the Vees this past year for whatevever reason.
A full roster and schedule for the camp can be found on the Flames website.
