Flames legend Håkan Loob named to Sweden’s all-century all-team

The Swedish Ice Hockey Association held a gala event in Stockholm on Nov. 17 to commemorate the association’s 100th anniversary. As part of that event, awards were handed out – including a fan-voted all-century all-star team.

Among those honoured was Calgary Flames legend Håkan Loob.

A product of Visby, Sweden, Loob had himself a fantastic ice hockey career.

A ninth-round pick of the Flames in the 1980 NHL Draft, Loob started in Swedish pro hockey after he turned 15. He played in his homeland with IK Graip, Roma IF, Karlskrona IK and Farjestad BK before deciding to head to North America to try his hand in the NHL. He played six seasons with the Flames, from 1983-89, winning a Stanley Cup and then returning to Sweden. He played another seven seasons in Sweden with Farjestad before retiring in 1996, after a pro career that spanned 21 seasons.

In addition to the Stanley Cup, Loob captured an Olympic gold medal, two World Championships, and an Elitserien championship. He’s been inducted into the Swedish Hockey Hall of Fame and the IIHF Hall of Fame. We named him the 28th-best Flame of All-Time during our 50th anniversary countdown.
