Another game, another strong performance from Calgary Flames prospect Matt Coronato at the 2022 World Junior Championship in Edmonton. Coronato scored two goals, including the game-winner, in a 3-2 United States victory over Sweden to close out the round robin portion of the tournament for the Americans.
Coronato finished the four round robin games with four goals and two assists. The USA has clinched top spot in their group and will play Czechia in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Coronato scored the United States’ second goal in the second period, jamming a puck past Sweden’s netminder from the side of the net.
He added his second goal in the third period to extend the lead to 3-0, accepting a pass and picking the top corner of the Sweden net.
This will be Coronato’s only trip to the World Juniors, as he’s a 2002 birthday and won’t be eligible for the 2023 edition of the tournament. So far, so good.
Coronato was the Flames’ first-round selection, 13th overall, in the 2021 NHL Draft. He’s set to return to Harvard University for his sophomore season after the World Juniors conclude.
