Calgary Flames fans will probably cheering for the United States during the upcoming World Junior Championship tournament in Edmonton. That’s because one of the Flames’ top prospects, forward Matt Coronato, has been named to the United States’ roster for the tournament, and will be the only Flames prospect at the event.
Coronato, 19, was the Flames’ first-round pick (13th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft. He’s heading into his sophomore year with Harvard University after leading the team in scoring during his freshman season. He was named his conference’s playoff MVP after clutch scoring from Coronato led Harvard to win the tournament. From February onward, Coronato was one of the top players in all of American college hockey.
Coronato was named to Team USA for the original instalment of the 2022 World Juniors, but that event was cancelled a few days in due to a rash of COVID-19 positive cases throughout several teams. Coronato has been used on a line with Toronto prospect Matt Knies and Arizona prospect Logan Cooley for several pre-tournament games, serving as Team USA’s second forward line.
The United States will play in Group B during the World Juniors, playing against Sweden, Germany, Switzerland and Austria in the round robin. The tournament runs Aug. 9-20 at Rogers Place in Edmonton.
