What are the Flames’ unsigned prospects doing next season?

The Calgary Flames have a few key prospects signed and ready to become full-time pros in 2021-22. Among them are Connor Zary, Jakob Pelletier, Yan Kuznetsov and Dustin Wolf. But what about the unsigned prospects? What are their plans looking like for next season?

Here’s a quick snapshot of where things stand as the calendar flips over to May.

2016 fifth rounder Mitchell Mattson is headed back to Michigan State for his senior year. The Flames don’t need to sign him until August 15, 2022.

2018 fourth rounder Demetrios Koumontzis is headed back to Arizona State for his senior year. The Flames don’t need to sign him until August 15, 2022.

2019 fifth rounder Josh Nodler is headed back to Michigan State for his junior year. The Flames don’t need to sign him until August 15, 2023.

2020 third rounder Jake Boltmann is headed back to Notre Dame for his sophomore season. The Flames don’t need to sign him until August 15, 2025.

2020 third rounder Jeremie Poirier is required to return to the QMJHL based on his age. He can go pro in 2022-23. The Flames don’t need to sign him until June 1, 2022.

2020 sixth rounder Rory Kerins is required to return to the OHL based on his age. He can go pro in 2022-23. The Flames don’t need to sign him until June 1, 2022.

2020 fifth rounder is eligible to return to the QMJHL as an overage player, or he can go pro because he’ll be 20 next season. The Flames don’t need to sign him until June 1, 2022, but he’s good enough that they’ll likely try to get him into Stockton for 2021-22.

2019 third rounder Ilya Nikolayev is under contract to the KHL’s Lokomotiv Yaroslavl organization for 2021-22. There’s no transfer agreement with Russia, so the Flames hold his rights indefinitely.

2020 second rounder Emil Heineman, acquired from Florida, is under contract to the SHL’s Leksands IF for 2021-22. The Flames don’t need to sign him until June 1, 2024.

2019 fourth rounder Lucas Feuk was on a short-term deal with Kalix HC of the third-tier HockeyEttan. He’s now a free agent and will probably land somewhere in the second-tier HockeyAllsvenskan. The Flames don’t need to sign him until June 1, 2023.

2020 fourth rounder Daniil Chechelev saw his contract with the HC Vityaz Podolsk organization expire this past week and he’s currently a free agent. There’s no transfer agreement with Russia, so the Flames hold his rights indefinitely.

2017 seventh rounder Filip Sveningsson is signed with MODO Hockey through 2023-24. The Flames’ hold on his NHL rights lapse on June 1 and based on him re-signing with MODO last week, their rights will lapse.
