Flames prospect update: Talkin’ playoffs!

By Ryan Pike
1 year agoThe Calgary Flames are bound for the playoffs, which begin next week. Also beginning next week? The AHL’s Calder Cup, where the Stockton Heat have a first round bye due to their stellar regular season. A slew of other Flames prospects are well-positioned for a ton of spring hockey.
Let’s dive into our weekly snapshot of the Flames’ up-and-comers!
This and that
- The playing seasons are over for F Mitchell Mattson (Michigan State), F Josh Nodler (also Michigan State), F Demetrios Koumontzis (Arizona State), D Jake Boltmann (Notre Dame) and F Matt Coronato (Harvard). All indications are that Nodler, Koumontzis, Boltmann and Coronato will be returning to school for the 2023-23 season, though Nodler has tranfered to UMass.
- Connor Mackey and Adam Ruzicka were both recalled to the Flames’ on regular recalls, so it seems unlikely that they will be sent back to Stockton before the end of the season.
Jack Beck – RW, Ottawa 67’s, OHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (168th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 36 | 22 | 22 | 44 | 25 | 38 | 22 | 32.37 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
The good news: Jack Beck has three goals in three games. The bad news: the 67’s are down 3-0 in their series with North Bay and could get swept out on Wednesday. If that happens, expect Beck to head to Stockton to join the Heat for their playoff run.
Lucas Ciona – LW, Seattle Thunderbirds, WHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (173rd overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 53 | 17 | 18 | 35 | 23 | 26 | 16 | 16.35 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
The Thunderbirds lead Kelowna 3-0 in their first round playoff series. Ciona missed Game 2 due to injury, but returned in Game 3 and had five shots on goal. No points, but that’s a lot of shots.
Walker Duehr – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 58 | 11 | 12 | 23 | 16 | 19 | 14 | 15.80 |
Change from last week | 4 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | +0.30 |
Walker Duehr continues to be a Steady Eddie in Stockton’s middle six. He’s fine! He plays the right side, he moves around and hits guys. He’s good for a point every two or three games.
Lucas Feuk – LW, Västerviks IK, HockeyAllsvenskan / Nybro Vikings IF/Väsby IK, HockeyEttan
Calgary’s fourth round pick (116th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Allsvenskan up to date | 10 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 6.51 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
HockeyEttan up to date | 32 | 11 | 16 | 27 | 20 | 18 | 16 | n/a |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Feuk is playing on Vasby’s top six in the HockeyAllsvenskan qualifying round robin, where he has five points in eight games. Vasby has only won twice in eight games and cannot advance.
Ryan Francis – C, Stockton Heat, AHL / Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL
Calgary’s fifth round pick (143rd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #8-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
AHL up to date | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0.00 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
QMJHL up to date | 51 | 25 | 38 | 63 | 38 | 54 | 34 | 28.77 |
Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | -0.70 |
Ryan Francis slowed down a little bit offensively this week, but he’s been really reliable in terms of his scoring in the last couple of months for Saint John.
Glenn Gawdin – C, Stockton Heat, AHL
St. Louis’ fourth round pick (116th overall) in the 2015 NHL Draft; free agent signing; #10-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 62 | 15 | 35 | 50 | 25 | 32 | 19 | 32.14 |
Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1 | +0.26 |
Glenn Gawdin has been a fixture in Stockton’s top line this season. They’ve slowed down offensively a bit lately – teams focus in on them with their match-ups to avoid getting clowned – but Gawdin still had a goal and an assist this week before missing the last two games with an injury.
Cole Huckins – LW, Acadie-Bathurst Titan, QMJHL
Calgary’s third round pick (77th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; #19-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 39 | 12 | 14 | 26 | 18 | 22 | 14 | 15.53 |
Change from last week | 4 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | -1.10 |
Over the weekend, Cole Huckins had an assist for his first point since February. This his return he’s being playing in the bottom six mostly, but the Titan have been missing several players due to illness and injury so sometimes he gets bumped up the lineup.
Cole Jordan – D, Moose Jaw Warriors, WHL
Calgary’s fifth round pick (141st overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 36 | 2 | 9 | 11 | 9 | 6 | 5 | 7.57 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Cole Jordan is on Moose Jaw’s third pairing. He hasn’t hit the scoresheet yet, but the Warriors are up 3-0 in their first round series with Saskatoon.
Rory Kerins – C, Soo Greyhounds, OHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (174th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #18-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 67 | 43 | 75 | 118 | 64 | 93 | 58 | 46.65 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
The Greyhounds lead Guelph 2-1 in their playoff series so far. Rory Kerins has two assists through three games.
Johannes Kinnvall – D, Stockton Heat, AHL
Free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 19 | 0 | 8 | 8 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 16.78 |
Change from last week | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.93 |
The Heat had a few injuries, but their blueline has largely remained unscathed so Johannes Kinnvall has been stuck in a third pairing rotation (and has been scratched three times over the past week).
Justin Kirkland – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Nashville’s third round pick (62nd overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft; free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 65 | 25 | 22 | 47 | 23 | 39 | 18 | 28.82 |
Change from last week | 4 | 3 | 0 | 3 | 0 | 3 | 0 | +0.07 |
Ho hum, another three goal week for Justin Kirkland. Sure, they were all power play goals, but he continues to chip in key goals at key times and is an important player for the AHL’s best team. If you’re a pending free agent like he is, there are much worse things to be.
Yan Kuznetsov – D, Stockton Heat, AHL / Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL
Calgary’s second round pick (50th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #15-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
AHL up to date | 12 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0.00 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
QMJHL up to date | 22 | 2 | 9 | 11 | 8 | 7 | 5 | 13.24 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0 | +1.32 |
Yan Kuznetsov had two assists in one game for Saint John, but was otherwise somewhat quiet offensively.
Ilya Nikolaev – C, Tri-City Storm, USHL
Calgary’s third round pick (88th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 58 | 23 | 49 | 72 | 37 | 46 | 22 | 28.50 |
Change from last week | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | -0.10 |
Ilya Nikolaev had one assist in his final regular season game, as Tri-City sat most of their key players in the other game to keep players fresh (and get their younger players some additional reps). Tri-City had a first round bye by virtue of winning the league’s regular season title, and will play Omaha in the second round.
Jakob Pelletier – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s first round pick (26th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft; #3-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 65 | 27 | 35 | 62 | 33 | 46 | 25 | 38.01 |
Change from last week | 4 | 0 | 4 | 4 | 2 | 2 | 1 | +0.12 |
On one hand, Jakob Pelletier had four assists in one game. On the other hand, he had zero assists in the other three games. He remains a top player for Stockton as a 21-year-old rookie.
Emilio Pettersen – LW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (167th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft; #11-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 58 | 13 | 14 | 27 | 24 | 20 | 17 | 18.55 |
Change from last week | 4 | 2 | 2 | 4 | 3 | 3 | 2 | +1.58 |
Emilio Pettersen, playing in Stockton’s middle six, erupted for three points in Stockton’s win over San Diego on Tuesday. He’s still a tad inconsistent this season – sometimes he has a bunch of points, sometimes he’s a healthy scratch.
Matthew Phillips – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (166th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft; #5-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 64 | 30 | 37 | 67 | 37 | 51 | 32 | 41.72 |
Change from last week | 4 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 | 1 | 1 | -0.79 |
Matthew Phillips had just one even strength goal, but he also had a couple of power play points. He remains quite good at AHL hockey, and this is a song we’ve sung before. He’s small, but quite good at sports.
Luke Philp – C, Stockton Heat, AHL
Free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 65 | 21 | 23 | 44 | 24 | 29 | 18 | 26.98 |
Change from last week | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -1.77 |
Luke Philp was held off the scoresheet this week.
Jérémie Poirier – D, Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL
Calgary’s third round pick (72nd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #9-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 64 | 14 | 39 | 52 | 36 | 33 | 22 | 19.29 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | -0.24 |
Jeremie Poirier had a primary assist but was otherwise quiet offensively for Saint John.
Colton Poolman – D, Stockton Heat, AHL
Free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 61 | 0 | 12 | 12 | 10 | 5 | 5 | 7.84 |
Change from last week | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.55 |
Colton Poolman was held off the scoresheet this week. He’s bounced around a bit in terms of his assignments.
Martin Pospisil – C, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s fourth round pick (105th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft; #16-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 46 | 7 | 18 | 25 | 13 | 19 | 11 | 21.66 |
Change from last week | 4 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -1.11 |
Martin Pospisil had a secondary power play assist over four games. He’s a fixture of Stockton’s middle six forward group.
Ilya Solovyov – D, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s seventh round pick (205th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #20-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 50 | 3 | 5 | 8 | 7 | 7 | 7 | 6.38 |
Change from last week | 4 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | +0.32 |
Ilya Solovyov had a secondary assist over four games. That’s not awful for a third pairing defender.
William Strömgren – LW, Rögle BK, J20 Nationell/CHL/SHL / IF Björklöven, HockeyAllsvenskan
Calgary’s second round pick (45th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; #13-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
SHL up to date | 6 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0.00 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
J20 up to date | 44 | 13 | 23 | 36 | 17 | 25 | 13 | 12.95 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
CHL up to date | 2 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 1 | n/a |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Stromgren’s season has ended, as Rogle’s SHL club was knocked out of the league semi-final series. Stromgren dressed twice in the SHL playoffs (with zero points) and six times in the J20 playoffs (with four points).
Eetu Tuulola – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (156th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 60 | 14 | 11 | 25 | 18 | 21 | 16 | 16.61 |
Change from last week | 4 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | -0.47 |
Eetu Tuulola had one primary assist this week, which is pretty decent considering he largely plays in Stockton’s bottom six and his linemates frequently change depending on who gets scratched or injured.
Cameron Whynot – D, Halifax Mooseheads, QMJHL
Calgary’s third round pick (89th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 45 | 4 | 13 | 17 | 9 | 11 | 6 | 8.80 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Whynot missed Halifax’s games this week due to an unspecified illness.
Connor Zary – C, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s first round pick (24th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #2-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | +0.05 |
Connor Zary scored a goal (yay!) but then missed two games with an injury (boo).
Dmitry Zavgorodniy – RW, Stockton Heat, AHL / HC Sochi, KHL
Calgary’s seventh round pick (198th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
AHL up to date | 11 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 3.62 |

KHL up to date | 10 | 0 | 3 | 3 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 19.78 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Dmitry Zavgorodniy, despite Stockton’s many injuries, was scratched in all four Heat games this week.
Daniil Chechelev – G, Stockton Heat, AHL / Kansas City Mavericks, ECHL
Calgary’s fourth round pick (96th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft
GP | TOI | SV% | |
AHL up to date | 1 | 63 | .848 |
Change from last week | 1 | 63 | +.848 |
ECHL up to date | 30 | 1715 | .894 |
Change from last week | – | – | – |
Because of Dustin Wolf’s call-up to the NHL and Adam Werner getting over an illness, Daniil Chechelev made his AHL debut this week. He didn’t get the win, but he got an assist (and Stockton got a point in regulation).
Arsenii Sergeev – G, Tri-City Storm, USHL
Calgary’s seventh round pick (205th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GP | TOI | SV% | |
Up to date | 41 | 2313 | .918 |

Arsenii Sergeev, leader of all goaltending categories in the USHL, played once in their two games this week. Tri-City had a first round playoff bye and will play Omaha in the second round.
Adam Werner – G, Stockton Heat, AHL
Colorado’s fifth round pick (131st overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft; free agent signing
GP | TOI | SV% | |
Up to date | 21 | 1186 | .886 |
Change from last week | 2 | 119 | +.007 |
With Dustin Wolf in the NHL, Adam Werner played twice and got a win and a loss. He was busy, though, and his performance really boosted his save percentage.
Dustin Wolf – G, Stockton Heat, AHL
Calgary’s seventh round pick (214th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; #4-ranked prospect
GP | TOI | SV% | |
Up to date | 46 | 2753 | .924 |
Change from last week | 1 | 60 | +.001 |
Dustin Wolf had a busy week. He allowed one goal in a Stockton win, then was called up to the NHL where he dressed as Calgary’s back-up and spent four days in the NHL before being re-assigned to the AHL late on Tuesday night.
