Flames re-sign Matthew Phillips and Luke Philp (one year, two-way, $750K)

The Calgary Flames have re-upped a couple of young forwards to one year deals. Right shot forwards Matthew Phillips and Luke Philp have signed identical one year, two-way deals that will pay them $750,000 at the NHL level.

Per Puckpedia, each player will receive $80,000 at the AHL level.

Phillips, 23, was a sixth round pick of the Flames in the 2016 NHL Draft – they received the pick in the David Jones trade with Minnesota at that year’s trade deadline. Despite being not particularly large, he was a superb WHL scorer and has emerged as one of Stockton’s most reliable offensive weapons. He made his NHL debut in the final game of the 2020-21 season. He had 21 points in 30 AHL games last season and will likely be in the mix for NHL time at this year’s training camp.

Philp, 25, joined the Flames as an undrafted signing from the University of Alberta Golden Bears of USPORTS. He’s spent his time in pro hockey exclusively with the Stockton Heat, but he’s been a consistent scoring threat. He had 17 points in 30 AHL games last season. He’s likely AHL depth right now until he can show a bit more dynamism in his game, but you’re never going to complain about having a guy with his shot in your farm system.
