Face-offs
Probably some surprising numbers for anyone who watched the game, but the truth is the Flames multiple PP’s and surprisingly potent man advantage was what won them this game, because they were relatively mediocre at ES. They got a staggering 13 chances a man up and I can’t remember them pulling off that kind of volume since I’ve been counting chances.
That said, most of the Sens damage came in the first and then they never really did much after that, despite chasing for the rest of the night. Calgary mostly shut them down in the third a few goals up, which is noteworthy. Glencross and company had a pretty decent night at all game-states, although the bounces is certainly going their way as well.
If you’re looking for something to worry about, Jarome Iginla, Brendan Morrison and Rene Bourque got absolutely WORKED this evening in terms of possession and chance differential at 5-on-5, and it wasn’t all Bourques fault. In fact, Iginla fought the puck even more than #17. He was especially vulnerable to being caught by a backchecker in the shallow end of the offensive zone. They ended up chasing guys around a lot in the defensive end as well.
Iginla’s line didn’t even face the toughest circumstances either. They started more often in the defensive end, but not an abnormal amount compared to every other Flames forward. They faced Spezza’s line the most, but Sutter wasn’t hard-matching or anything…Iginla only spent 32% of his ES ice time versus Jason and he’s really the only Senator Iginla should be worrying about up front. That trio will have to be much, much better when the Flames aren’t facing clubs battling for the first overall pick in June,
