The Calgary Flames have made their second selection of the sixth round at the 2021 NHL Draft. At 173rd overall, they’ve selected forward Lucas Ciona.
Ciona was ranked 270th by FC Hockey and 151st among North American skaters by Central Scouting.
An Edmonton kid, Ciona is a left shot winger who is listed at 6’3″ and 210 pounds. He had two goals and 11 assists for the Western Hockey League’s Seattle Thunderbirds in 2020-21, matching his 2019-20 point output in 30 fewer games.
Here’s a portion of FC Hockey’s assessment of his game:
Ciona presents as a meat-and-potatoes, straightline forward, however there is an understated intelligence in his game that allows him to always be in the right spots on the ice. Skating ability is a knock, as he struggles to make plays through weight shifts and his edges kill momentum. Still, he is hard on the forecheck and uses his size and strength to separate the opposition from possession. Makes quick plays with the puck on his stick that can alleviate pressure and uses his body to protect the puck, showing some potential to be a power player as he develops a small area game, which has been slow to come. Not looking to inflict physical damage, rather he uses his size and pace as a tool to cause turnovers. His head is always up with the puck on his stick and while he doesn’t possess elite creativity, he is a plus passer who excels at keeping the play moving forward towards the other end of the ice.
