But while the turnaround is welcome, it remains to be seen whether it comes too late to get the Flames back into the NHL playoff picture. Calgary enters Wednesday’s action trailing the Canadiens by six points in the race for fourth place in the North Division, with Montreal holding three games in hand. However, Tuesday’s contest kicks off a season-defining seven-game stretch for the Flames that features five dates with Montreal, and one meeting each with also-rans Vancouver and Ottawa.
If the Flames are going to close the gap on the Canadiens, they must find a way to overcome their historic struggles when playing in Montreal. The team tallied a 2-0 win on January 30 to end a three-game slide at the Bell Centre, but has not scored more than two goals in four road games against the Canadiens since 2017.
However, the Flames have managed to turn in some stingy performances in recent meetings with Montreal. The team has limited the Canadiens to just four total goals while winning three of the first four meetings this season, and has given up just 11 total goals over its past five contests in Montreal. Not surprisingly, the UNDER has paid out regularly in totals betting when these two teams meet, going 3-0-1 this season and 8-1-2 in their past 11 matchups.
The Canadiens are also coming off a win over Toronto, and look to Wednesday night’s game as -155 home favorites at online sports betting sites. Montreal escaped with a 4-2 win over the visiting Maple Leafs on Monday to end a three-game slide, but steady success has eluded the team. The Canadiens have won just six of their past 15 home games, and have strung together consecutive victories just once in their past 29 contests, a three-game win streak on home ice back in late March.
