Calgary’s steady defensive play has powered a steady run for the UNDER in totals betting, which has prevailed in eight straight road games. The Flames have also been enormously successful at containing the Oilers in each of their past two meetings, surrendering just one total goal during that stretch after allowing 23 total goals over their previous five meetings.
But while the Flames have proven they can compete with any of their North Division opponents when they pay attention to defense, their recent efforts have failed to lift them into a postseason position.
After seeing Montreal escape with a 5-3 win over the slumping Winnipeg Jets on Friday, Calgary remains six points back of the fourth-place Canadiens with just seven games remaining on the regular season schedule. And with Montreal set to face off earlier in the evening against Ottawa, a victory by the resurgent Senators would go a long way towards giving the Flames a lift heading into this season’s final Battle of Alberta matchup.
While the Flames battle to keep their postseason hopes alive, the Oilers aim to strengthen their grasp on second place in the division standings as -130 home favorites at betting sites. With Thursday’s defeat, Edmonton now rides a two-game losing streak on home ice, ending an eight-game win streak.
The Oilers have remained a force on home ice, limiting opponents to just two goals per game over their past 10 contests. However, Edmonton’s streakiness at home is nothing new, with the team enduring three-game losing streaks there on two previous occasions this season.
