The Calgary Flames will try to overcome an offensive drought that has contributed to the team’s current two-game slide when they close out a road series with the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday as -175 favourites on the NHL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Calgary’s offense sputtered in Monday’s 2-1 series-opening loss, and the team has now tallied just one total goal in two straight defeats going into Wednesday’s matchup at the Canadian Tire Centre.
Flames vs Senators | OddsShark Matchup Report
Offensive production has been a constant problem for the Flames since the start of the campaign. With Monday’s loss, Calgary fell behind the Senators in total goals scored this season, and now ranks last in the North Division. Despite enjoying success during their recent homestand and picking up the win in four of their past seven overall contests, the Flames have mustered just 2.43 goals per game during that stretch.
Calgary’s top producers have been particularly quiet during the team’s current slide. Leading goal scorer Johnny Gaudreau has tallied just two markers over his past seven outings, and has contributed just one helper in the month of March. Top point-getter Elias Lindholm has also been quiet, scoring just twice over his past 18 road appearances, and Sean Monahan has now gone five games without a point.
The Flames have also been stymied by hot goaltending in their two recent losses. Senators rookie Filip Gustavsson stood tall in his first career NHL start on Monday, turning aside 35 of 36 shots after Toronto netminder Jack Campbell blanked the Flames 2-0 last Saturday in his first start in three weeks.
Monday’s defeat also represented another opportunity missed for Calgary, which enters Wednesday’s action lagging four points back of the fourth-place Montreal Canadiens in the race for the final playoff spot. With hockey operations currently suspended in Montreal due to an outbreak of COVID-19, the Flames are well positioned to gain ground on the Canadiens.
However, to do so, they must overcome their recent swoon when playing Ottawa on the road. The team has now fallen to defeat in four of five visits to Ottawa, and has scored two or fewer goals on four occasions during that stretch. Calgary has also been a disappointment in the final date of multi-game series played on the road this season, falling to defeat in each of its past three, and losing four of six overall.
Listed as lengthy +155 underdogs at betting sites for Wednesday, the Senators aim to win two games in a row for the first time in a month. Ottawa has lost eight of 12 overall since seeing its season-high three-game surge halted, but the team has been solid on home ice earning at least a point in nine of 10 home dates.
