Friends, it’s finally Deadline Day! The trade deadline is mere hours away!
As we refresh Twitter awaiting trades, let’s dive into the mailbag!
The national junior teams will have new camps and can bring new teams, but everybody who was eligible in the December/January tournament will still be eligible in August.
Depending on whether or not some original Team Canada players are available – their NHL teams may want them to rest up for training camp rather than play in this tournament, or the players may have that preference – Rory Kerins will definitely be on the World Junior radar. He’s been excellent for the Soo Greyhounds.
The big question is this: what would the Flames be trying to accomplish with a Sean Monahan trade? He’s a really well-respected player in the organization and in the locker room – he’s worn an alternate captain’s A for most of his time here – and it’s not about jettisoning him for his cap space necessarily, it’s probably also about finding a good spot for him to rebuild his game.
They won’t be trying to sell him for magic beans, is what I’m saying. It’s got to be to the right place at the right price.
Rapid fire answers:
  1. Before the deadline? I give it 25% chance of happening. His cap hit is a lot to take on mid-season, but I could see the Flames making something happen at the draft.
  2. I would guess somebody like Dean Kukan or Mark Pysyk or Brett Kulak. (Guessing.)
  3. I think Darryl Sutter will roll out the new lines against San Jose, but I also think he’s going to keep shuffling up their lines to see what works and to see what different dynamics can emerge. The whole point is to prepare the team for a (long) playoff run, and you’ll need a bunch of different styles of game and line combinations to win playoff series.
  4. You can see that Calle Jarnkrok is still figuring out the nuances of the Flames style and system so far, but he hasn’t looked out of place at all. In a week or two, he’ll really start finding his groove I’d imagine.
A couple folks sent something like this in, so let’s give it a shot.
Gaudreau – Lindholm – Tkachuk
Mangiapane – Jarnkrok – Toffoli
Pelletier – Backlund – Coleman
Lucic – Ruzicka – Phillips
Hanifin – Andersson
Kylington – Tanev
Mackey – Gudbranson
Markstrom
Vladar
Don’t ask me to figure out how the cap space works out. I have no idea.
