FlamesNation prospect update: an October stats round-up

7 months agoThe month of October is over, and every single Calgary Flames prospect has a full month under their belt (except for a player or two who dealt with injuries). A few individuals have gotten off to excellent starts.
Here’s a statistical rundown of prospect performances so far!
Jack Beck – RW, Ottawa 67’s, OHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (168th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; 9th-ranked prospect

Beck’s been a fixture for the 67’s on their top line this season and while he hasn’t scored as many goals, he’s generated a ton of shots so far. He missed one game this past weekend after an awkward collision after scoring a goal. (Hopefully he’s back soon.)
Parker Bell – LW/C, Tri-City Americans, WHL

A big lanky kid, Bell has been a pretty effective producer thus far for Tri-City. His production is skewed a bit towards special teams, but he was fairly consistent in October.

On one hand, Boltmann has been generating shots. On the other hand, he’s getting top four minutes for a pretty good program and isn’t hitting the scoresheet all that much.

Ciona’s been excellent for Seattle early this season, scoring at well over a point per game pace. Heck, he’s scoring at over a point per game pace with just his five-on-five primary points. He signed his entry-level deal with the Flames this past week.
Matt Coronato – C/RW, Harvard University Crimson, NCAA/ECAC

Coronato has been slotted as Harvard’s first line centre this season and so far, so god. He has goals in each of his club’s games, and he scored twice against Princeton to get Harvard the win.

Huckins had a tough 2021-22 season, but he’s fit in quite nicely in an offensive role with Sherbrooke so far this season.

Jones has been fairly productive early on, but man, look at that shot total! He’s averaging nearly four shots per game.

Another player that had a tough 2021-22, primarily due to injuries, Jordan’s settled into a major role for the Warriors so far this season.

Kerins got bumped down to Rapid City due to the glut of forwards with the Wranglers. But so far, Kerins is excelling in the ECHL. You would hope a prospect of note would stand out at that level, but he definitely has. It’s a good first step for him.

Klapka was scratched early for the Wranglers, but he’s managed to stay in the lineup and consistently chip in points in recent games.

Koumontzis is a fifth-year senior for the Sun Devils. He’s a fixture on their bottom six, but he remains a steady role player (but isn’t a big difference-maker for them).

Littler has been superb for the Wild this season. He’s an NHL-drafted player in junior A, so you’d expect him to be impressive, but he’s been living up to expectations.

Nodler has settled in as the first line centre for the Minutemen after three seasons with Michigan State. UMass is off to a great start to the season, even if Nodler’s offensive output is fairly quiet so far.

Pelletier’s season so far is almost a microcosm of the Wranglers’. He’s been playing well and generating chances, but the offence just hasn’t been there as often as it was last year. (He has yet to register an even strength point.)

Pettersen was the 13th forward to start the season for the Wranglers, but he’s gotten more consistent ice time due to Clark Bishop’s suspension. He’s done well, so time will tell if he remains in the lineup when Bishop’s suspension is complete.

Don’t be shocked: Phillips is, and has been for several seasons, a really good AHL player. Even though his offence skews towards special teams, as has the Wranglers’ as a team, he’s been superb.

Poirier had a strong camp with the Flames – for a 20-year-old – and he’s off to a good start to his pro career offensively.

Between September and October, Rönni played just twice. He suffered a lower-body injury at a tournament, then played one game in September, then missed about six weeks with an illness. He returned in the final weekend of October, playing a single U20 game. He’s set to rejoin Tappara’s pro team and hopefully his injury and illness woes are behind him.

Strömgren played in every SHL game for Brynäs in October. He’s been a fixture on the fourth line, getting regular minutes. He had two points in a single game last week, too.

Another player that had a tough 2021-22 season, Whynot is off to a really solid start for the Mooseheads and is a big part of their power play.

Shockingly, getting a full camp under his belt instead of getting injured has led to a strong start for Zary. He’s at a point-per-game pace and don’t forget, he’s only 20 years old.

Chechelev has started three of Rapid City’s four games so far this season. He’s put up respectable numbers in a league that can be pretty shaky defensively.

Sergeev is currently tandeming with sophomore Logan Terness, who’s off to an even better start than Serveev is. UConn’s goaltending battle, and how Sergeev vies for starts, will be a story to watch all season at this rate.

The Wranglers have had some defensive challenges early on and Wolf’s numbers have taken a dip. He was able to steal games for the club last season down the stretch when they had defensively challenges, but he hasn’t been able to do that (yet) this season.
