FlamesNation prospect update: an October stats round-up

By Ryan Pike
7 months agoThe month of October is over, and every single Calgary Flames prospect has a full month under their belt (except for a player or two who dealt with injuries). A few individuals have gotten off to excellent starts.
Here’s a statistical rundown of prospect performances so far!
Jack Beck – RW, Ottawa 67’s, OHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (168th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; 9th-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 10 | 2 | 11 | 13 | 10 | 7 | 6 | 36 | 34.43 |
October | 9 | 2 | 9 | 11 | 8 | 7 | 6 | 29 | 32.37 |
Beck’s been a fixture for the 67’s on their top line this season and while he hasn’t scored as many goals, he’s generated a ton of shots so far. He missed one game this past weekend after an awkward collision after scoring a goal. (Hopefully he’s back soon.)
Parker Bell – LW/C, Tri-City Americans, WHL
Calgary’s fifth round pick (155th overall) in the 2022 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 10 | 6 | 5 | 11 | 9 | 7 | 6 | 22 | 27.24 |
October | 9 | 6 | 4 | 10 | 8 | 6 | 5 | 19 | 27.52 |
A big lanky kid, Bell has been a pretty effective producer thus far for Tri-City. His production is skewed a bit towards special teams, but he was fairly consistent in October.
Jake Boltmann – D, University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish, NCAA/Big 10
Calgary’s third round pick (80th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 8 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 16 | 3.41 |
October | 8 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 16 | 3.41 |
On one hand, Boltmann has been generating shots. On the other hand, he’s getting top four minutes for a pretty good program and isn’t hitting the scoresheet all that much.
Lucas Ciona – LW, Seattle Thunderbirds, WHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (173rd overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 9 | 7 | 10 | 17 | 13 | 13 | 10 | 27 | 46.78 |
October | 9 | 7 | 10 | 17 | 13 | 13 | 10 | 27 | 46.78 |
Ciona’s been excellent for Seattle early this season, scoring at well over a point per game pace. Heck, he’s scoring at over a point per game pace with just his five-on-five primary points. He signed his entry-level deal with the Flames this past week.
Matt Coronato – C/RW, Harvard University Crimson, NCAA/ECAC
Calgary’s first round pick (13th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; 2nd-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 2 | 3 | 0 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 10 | 34.44 |
October | 2 | 3 | 0 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 10 | 34.44 |
Coronato has been slotted as Harvard’s first line centre this season and so far, so god. He has goals in each of his club’s games, and he scored twice against Princeton to get Harvard the win.
Walker Duehr- RW, Calgary Wranglers, AHL
Free agent signing; 19th-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 6 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 12 | 19.93 |
October | 6 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 12 | 19.93 |
Playing in a depth role, Duehr has been solid for the Wranglers in October.
Lucas Feuk – LW, Rapid City Rush, ECHL
Calgary’s fourth round pick (116th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 3 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 7.65 |
October | 3 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 7.65 |
Feuk missed the Rush’s fourth game, but he registered his first North American pro point.
Dennis Gilbert – D, Calgary Wranglers, AHL
Free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 6 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3 | 0.00 |
October | 6 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3 | 0.00 |
Playing big minutes so far for the Wranglers, Gilbert has yet to hit the scoresheet.
Cole Huckins – RW, Sherbrooke Phoenix, QMJHL
Calgary’s third round pick (77th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 12 | 4 | 5 | 9 | 6 | 5 | 3 | 35 | 17.47 |
October | 11 | 4 | 5 | 9 | 6 | 5 | 3 | 35 | 19.05 |
Huckins had a tough 2021-22 season, but he’s fit in quite nicely in an offensive role with Sherbrooke so far this season.
Ben Jones – C, Calgary Wranglers, AHL
Free agent signing; 20th-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 6 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 23 | 19.93 |
October | 6 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 23 | 19.93 |
Jones has been fairly productive early on, but man, look at that shot total! He’s averaging nearly four shots per game.
Cole Jordan – D, Moose Jaw Warriors, WHL
Calgary’s fifth round pick (141st overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 11 | 2 | 4 | 6 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 19 | 13.51 |
October | 10 | 2 | 4 | 6 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 19 | 14.86 |
Another player that had a tough 2021-22, primarily due to injuries, Jordan’s settled into a major role for the Warriors so far this season.
Rory Kerins – C, Rapid City Rush, ECHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (174th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; 6th-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 4 | 3 | 2 | 5 | 4 | 2 | 2 | 5 | 28.70 |
October | 4 | 3 | 2 | 5 | 4 | 2 | 2 | 5 | 28.70 |
Kerins got bumped down to Rapid City due to the glut of forwards with the Wranglers. But so far, Kerins is excelling in the ECHL. You would hope a prospect of note would stand out at that level, but he definitely has. It’s a good first step for him.
Adam Klapka – RW, Calgary Wranglers, AHL
Free agent signing
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 5 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 7 | 23.91 |
October | 5 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 7 | 23.91 |
Klapka was scratched early for the Wranglers, but he’s managed to stay in the lineup and consistently chip in points in recent games.
Demetrios Koumontzis – RW, Arizona State University Sun Devils, NCAA/Independent
Calgary’s fourth round pick (108th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 9 | 3 | 1 | 4 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 18 | 12.14 |
October | 9 | 3 | 1 | 4 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 18 | 12.14 |
Koumontzis is a fifth-year senior for the Sun Devils. He’s a fixture on their bottom six, but he remains a steady role player (but isn’t a big difference-maker for them).
Yan Kuznetsov – D, Calgary Wranglers, AHL
Calgary’s second round pick (50th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; 11th-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 5 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 4 | 0.00 |
October | 5 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 4 | 0.00 |
Kuznetsov is playing consistently for the Wranglers, but has yet to register his first professional point.
Cade Littler – C, Wenatchee Wild, BCHL
Calgary’s seventh round pick (219th overall) in the 2022 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 12 | 6 | 5 | 11 | 9 | 8 | 7 | – | n/a |
October | 10 | 5 | 4 | 9 | 7 | 6 | 5 | – | n/a |
Littler has been superb for the Wild this season. He’s an NHL-drafted player in junior A, so you’d expect him to be impressive, but he’s been living up to expectations.
Ilya Nikolaev – C, Rapid City Rush, ECHL
Calgary’s third round pick (88th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft; 18th-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0.00 |
October | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0.00 |
Nikolaev is still looking for his first North American professional point.
Josh Nodler – C, University of Massachusetts (Amherst) Minutemen, NCAA/HE
Calgary’s fifth round pick (150th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 7 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 6 | 9.84 |
October | 7 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 6 | 9.84 |
Nodler has settled in as the first line centre for the Minutemen after three seasons with Michigan State. UMass is off to a great start to the season, even if Nodler’s offensive output is fairly quiet so far.
Jakob Pelletier – LW, Calgary Wranglers, AHL
Calgary’s first round pick (26th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft; 3rd-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 6 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 13 | 19.93 |
October | 6 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 13 | 19.93 |
Pelletier’s season so far is almost a microcosm of the Wranglers’. He’s been playing well and generating chances, but the offence just hasn’t been there as often as it was last year. (He has yet to register an even strength point.)
Emilio Pettersen – LW, Calgary Wranglers, AHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (167th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft; 14th-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 3 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 4 | 26.57 |
October | 3 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 4 | 26.57 |
Pettersen was the 13th forward to start the season for the Wranglers, but he’s gotten more consistent ice time due to Clark Bishop’s suspension. He’s done well, so time will tell if he remains in the lineup when Bishop’s suspension is complete.
Matthew Phillips – RW, Calgary Wranglers, AHL
Calgary’s sixth round pick (166th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft; 7th-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 6 | 4 | 4 | 8 | 5 | 2 | 2 | 15 | 53.14 |
October | 6 | 4 | 4 | 8 | 5 | 2 | 2 | 15 | 53.14 |
Don’t be shocked: Phillips is, and has been for several seasons, a really good AHL player. Even though his offence skews towards special teams, as has the Wranglers’ as a team, he’s been superb.
Jeremie Poirier – D, Calgary Wranglers, AHL
Calgary’s third round pick (72nd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; 8th-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 6 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 15 | 19.93 |
October | 6 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 15 | 19.93 |
Poirier had a strong camp with the Flames – for a 20-year-old – and he’s off to a good start to his pro career offensively.
Martin Pospisil – LW, Calgary Wranglers, AHL
Calgary’s fourth round pick (105th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft; 12th-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 6 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 17 | 13.28 |
October | 6 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 17 | 13.28 |
Pospisil is generating a good amount of shots, but only has a pair of points thus far – and zero at even strength.
Topi Rönni – C, Tappara Tampere, Liiga/U20 SM-sarja/CHL
Calgary’s second round pick (59th overall) in the 2022 NHL Draft; 13th-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
U20 season to date | 2 | 1 | 4 | 5 | 3 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 41.00 |
October | 1 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 49.20 |
Between September and October, Rönni played just twice. He suffered a lower-body injury at a tournament, then played one game in September, then missed about six weeks with an illness. He returned in the final weekend of October, playing a single U20 game. He’s set to rejoin Tappara’s pro team and hopefully his injury and illness woes are behind him.
Cole Schwindt – C/RW, Calgary Wranglers, AHL
Acquired in a trade with Florida; 10th-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 6 | 0 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 1 | 1 | 9 | 19.93 |
October | 6 | 0 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 1 | 1 | 9 | 19.93 |
Schwindt has been solid if unspectacular for the Wranglers thus far, particuarly in terms of his offensive production. (Again, that’s been a team-wide thing.)
Ilya Solovyov – D, Calgary Wranglers, AHL
Calgary’s seventh round pick (205th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; 17th-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 5 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3 | 0.00 |
October | 5 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3 | 0.00 |
Solovyov has played on the Wranglers’ third pairing and been perfectly adequate, but he’s generated zero points.
William Strömgren – LW, Rögle BK/Brynäs IF, SHL/J20 Nationell/CHL
Calgary’s second round pick (45th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; 16th-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
SHL season to date | 15 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 4 | 9.77 |
October | 10 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 4 | 9.77 |
J20 season to date | 1 | 3 | 0 | 3 | 3 | 1 | 1 | 4 | 47.48 |
October | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
CHL season to date | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | n/a |
October | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Strömgren played in every SHL game for Brynäs in October. He’s been a fixture on the fourth line, getting regular minutes. He had two points in a single game last week, too.
Cameron Whynot – D, Halifax Mooseheads, QMJHL
Calgary’s third round pick (89th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 11 | 0 | 6 | 6 | 4 | 2 | 2 | 12 | 12.70 |
October | 11 | 0 | 6 | 6 | 4 | 2 | 2 | 12 | 12.70 |
Another player that had a tough 2021-22 season, Whynot is off to a really solid start for the Mooseheads and is a big part of their power play.
Connor Zary – C, Calgary Wranglers, AHL
Calgary’s first round pick (24th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft; 4th-ranked prospect
GP | G | A | P | P1 | 5v5 P | 5v5 P1 | SH | NHLe
Season to date | 6 | 3 | 3 | 6 | 4 | 4 | 2 | 16 | 39.85 |
October | 6 | 3 | 3 | 6 | 4 | 4 | 2 | 16 | 39.85 |
Shockingly, getting a full camp under his belt instead of getting injured has led to a strong start for Zary. He’s at a point-per-game pace and don’t forget, he’s only 20 years old.
Daniil Chechelev – G, Rapid City Rush, ECHL
Calgary’s fourth round pick (96th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft
GP | TOI | SV% | |
Season to date | 3 | 179 | .905 |
October | 3 | 179 | .905 |
Chechelev has started three of Rapid City’s four games so far this season. He’s put up respectable numbers in a league that can be pretty shaky defensively.
Arsenii Sergeev – G, University of Connecticut Huskies, NCAA/Hockey East
Calgary’s seventh round pick (205th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft; 15th-ranked prospect
GP | TOI | SV% | |
Up to date | 4 | 241 | .929 |
Change from last week | 4 | 241 | .929 |
Sergeev is currently tandeming with sophomore Logan Terness, who’s off to an even better start than Serveev is. UConn’s goaltending battle, and how Sergeev vies for starts, will be a story to watch all season at this rate.
Dustin Wolf – G, Calgary Wranglers, AHL
Calgary’s seventh round pick (214th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft; 1st-ranked prospect
GP | TOI | SV% | |
Up to date | 4 | 208 | .890 |
Change from last week | 4 | 208 | .890 |
The Wranglers have had some defensive challenges early on and Wolf’s numbers have taken a dip. He was able to steal games for the club last season down the stretch when they had defensively challenges, but he hasn’t been able to do that (yet) this season.
