FlamesNation Prospect Update: The season begins

Hey, it’s the first week of prospect hockey, which means the return of the weekly prospect update. It’s quite simple, really: we update you with what the prospects did the previous week every Tuesday.
So that’s what we’re doing today. It may be the first week with only two or three games played, but it’s meaningful, Flames-relevant hockey. We’ll take it.
In case you missed it:
- Well there’s been a lot of prospect content between the time this series last ran and now, so we’ll just look at stuff from the last seven days, starting with Stockton’s Finest preview of the upcoming Stockton Heat season.
- Ari looks at how the 2016 second rounders are paying off dividends for the Flames.
- We’ve had two rounds of cuts so far: one sent eight to the CHL, and the other provided Stockton with bodies for their camp.

Joly started the season strong for the Drakkar, picking up a goal and the first star honours in the season debut and then adding two points in the next game.

Karnaukhov began the season in the KHL with CSKA, but has been demoted back down to the VHL. He’s kind of stuck in Russian tweener territory right now, which is concerning given that he had about as excellent a season as you could ask for with Zvezda last year. Or not at all concerning given that he’s pretty much not even remotely a prospect of note. Either/or.
Linus Lindstrom – C/LW, Skelleftea AIK, SHL

Lindstrom hasn’t cracked the scoresheet yet, but his season still has started off on a positive note. He’s taken on a 2C role for Skelleftea, a major bump from the 3/4C duty he saw last year. He’s playing about three to four minutes more per night and has also seen a bit more offensive ice. Early season, small sample size stat alert, but he’s already picked up five shots through three games thus far. That represents about one-eighth of his individual shot generation from last year.
Rushan Rafikov – D, Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, KHL

Hasn’t contributed to the stat sheet aside from two shots. Roman is currently playing the 3C role for the Giants, which might be due to the Flames cutting him two days before his season started. Hopefully he can quickly rise back up the depth chart.

Ruzicka was limited to one game this past week due to inclement weather, but he still found his way onto the highlight reel:

Sveningsson is getting his first taste of regular pro hockey in the Allsvenskan, and has had some great early success. He picked up a goal in his season debut and has tallied five shots on goal thus far. He’s doing this from a 3/4 winger role, too. The Allsvenskan’s site has him at only five minutes of ice time per game (which may be an error: Sweden counts healthy scratches as a game played with 0:00 ice time, but all boxscores indicated that Sveningsson actively participated in both of Oskarshamn’s games this season).

The cherubic prospect has started the season hot for HPK, currently tied for the team lead in scoring thus far. He’s been almost exclusively a powerplay dynamo so far, but hopefully he can round out his entire game.

The premature “best prospect 2018” award goes to Zavgorodniy, who is tied for second in the QMJHL after an explosive four-point (2G, 2A) outing against Victoriaville on Sunday. He was one of the camp prospect standouts, so make sure to keep an eye on him this year.
