Friedman: Ryan Huska and Mitch Love among Calgary Flames coaching finalists

By Ryan Pike
3 months agoBy all accounts the Calgary Flames are getting very close to selecting their next head coach. And on Wednesday’s edition of Sportsnet’s 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman, in conversation with Jeff Marek, laid out four names he believes to be among the finalist group. Among them? Flames assistant coach Ryan Huska and Calgary Wranglers head coach Mitch Love.
Here’s Friedman:
I don’t know this for sure, but here’s who I think some of the group is. I think Ryan Huska is still there. I think Mitch Love is still there. I think Travis Green is still there. And one other person I’ve heard there is Todd Reirden. If you’ll remember, Jeff, in one of their previous coaching searches, Todd Reirden was a finalist. And when I heard that while I was travelling the other day, it made sense to me, because I think Travis Green got a serious look from them a few years ago, too. So what that kind of says to me is that Craig Conroy is going through some of the previous history of coaching interviews and saying ‘well we liked that guy back then, let’s re-look at it here.’ Four of the guys that i think are in the mix, I admit I could be wrong, but this is my educated guess, is Huska, Love, Green and Reirden. and if there’s anyone else, I don’t know. but I heard they spoke to Reirden recently. so I just think that’s kind of the potential group they could be picking from, though I freely admit there could be people there I’m not seeing.
On Tuesday’s edition of Flames Talk, Sportsnet 960 The Fan’s Pat Steinberg name-dropped Huska, Love and Green as part of the final group of contenders.
Reirden reportedly interviewed with the Flames in 2016 and was a finalist when the club hired Glen Gulutzan. He’s currently the associate coach with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
We’ll have more updates on the Flames’ head coaching search as it unfolds.
