Calgary Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom pulled out all the stops to deny Mark Scheifele of a game-tying goal midway through the first period of Saturday’s game against the Winnipeg Jets.
The big Swede did a cartwheel in his crease and managed to get a piece of the puck with his glove after Scheifele, camping out at the top of the right faceoff circle, fired a quick wrister with “goal” written all over it.
Here’s the video of the save, clipped by FlamesNation‘s own Robert Munnich (Ring of Fire CGY on Twitter):
The Flames currently lead the Jets 2–1 after the first period of Saturday’s game. Adam Ruzicka has a goal and an assist, with Elias Lindholm scoring the other goal for the Flames; Neal Pionk has the lone tally for the Jets.
Markstrom isn’t the first goaltender to pull off an acrobatic bicycle kick-style move to make a save. Who else remembers Reto Berra?

Markstrom, 32, entered Saturday’s game against the Jets with a 4–3–2 record and an .893 save percentage in 10 appearances with the Flames to start the 2022–23 regular season.
He finished second in Vezina Trophy voting in 2022 after posting a 37–15–9 record and a .922 save percentage with the Flames in 2021–22.

The Florida Panthers selected Markstrom in the second round (No. 31 overall) of the 2008 NHL Draft. He spent parts of four seasons with the Panthers before being traded to the Vancouver Canucks as part of a deal for Roberto Luongo.
Markstrom lasted seven seasons with the Canucks, helping the team reach the second round of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs before ultimately leaving for Calgary as a UFA.
The Flames entered Saturday’s game on a seven-game losing streak after starting the 2022–23 regular season with a 5–1–0 record.
