The Calgary Flames will be desperate for a win to salvage their distant hopes of returning to the playoff picture in the North Division standings when they close out their season series with the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday as -125 home favorites on the NHL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Calgary returns home after settling for a split in its weekend series in Edmonton, which leaves the club trailing both Winnipeg and the Montreal Canadiens by 10 points in the hunt for fourth place with just six games remaining on their schedule heading into Wednesday night’s matchup at Scotiabank Saddledome.
Jets vs Flames | OddsShark Matchup Report
The Flames have managed to keep their razor-thin playoff chances alive by posting wins in six of their past 10 contests. However, the offensive woes that have plagued the club throughout the current campaign have come back to haunt them during their current 1-2-0 run. Calgary tallied just five total goals during that stretch, and now ranks a distant 26th in team scoring with a meagre 2.57 goals per game.
The Calgary offense has performed moderately better than their average on home ice, averaging 3.40 goals per game over their past five outings. That offensive outburst has lifted the Flames to victory in three of their past five home contests after earning the win in just one of their previous six at the Saddledome. However, Calgary remains far from a reliable wager when pegged as a home favorite at online sports betting sites, earning the win in just three of its past eight while scoring two or fewer goals in three of its past five. That run includes a lopsided 5-1 loss to the Jets in their most recent visit to Calgary back on March 29.
The upside for the Flames is their recent success when battling the Jets on home ice. Calgary has topped the Jets in nine of their past 14 meetings, but has struggled to maintain a consistent track record against Winnipeg this season, splitting the four meetings between the two clubs on home ice.
However, the timing may be ideal to renew their historic home dominance over the Jets, who arrive in Calgary riding a seven-game losing streak and pegged as +105 underdogs (how the moneyline works). The Jets have quickly fallen out of the hunt for home-ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs while enduring their longest losing streak since the NHL returned to Winnipeg a decade ago.
Connor Hellebuyck has looked like anything but the reigning Vezina Trophy winner during the epic slide, going 0-5-0 over his past six starts, and getting the hook on two occasions during that stretch. Despite their recent woes, the Jets have been steady on the road, winning eight of their past 12.
