A pair of the Calgary Flames’ most prominent young prospects are headed to a major NHLPA marketing event. Matt Coronato and Dustin Wolf are listed as the Flames’ representatives at the annual NHLPA Rookie Showcase, held on Sept. 5 in Arlington, Virginia at the Washington Capitals’ practice facility.
The annual event is held in conjunction with Upper Deck, and is primarily for the purposes of getting photos and other prep work for Upper Deck’s hockey cards and things like that. But if nothing else, it gathers a ton of the NHL’s premiere up-and-coming talent in one place for fun and revelry.
Jakob Pelletier and Connor Zary attended the 2022 edition of the event, and most of the Flames’ top prospects have gone in the past – including Dillon Dube, Matthew Tkachuk, Sean Monahan, Sam Bennett and others.
The Flames’ first-rounder in 2021, Coronato signed his entry-level deal with the Flames in the spring, following the completion of his sophomore season with Harvard University, and made his NHL debut in Calgary’s final game of the regular season. He subsequently represented the United States at the men’s World Championships.
A seventh-round pick in 2019, Wolf made his NHL debut in the same game as Coronato, capping off a fantastic second pro season that saw Wolf lead the AHL in virtually every goaltending category and be named not just the league’s top goaltender (for the second consecutive season) but also the circuit’s most valuable player.
The Flames begin training camp in a few short weeks. Prospect camp opens on Sept. 13, with main camp following on Sept. 20.
