Matthew Coronato invited to USA Hockey’s World Junior selection camp

A Calgary Flames prospect will be vying to represent the United States at the upcoming World Junior Hockey Championship tournament. 2021 first-rounder Matthew Coronato has been invited to USA Hockey’s selection camp.

Coronato, 19, is currently a freshman at Harvard University. He previously played for the USHL’s Chicago Steel, where his offensive prowess earned him attention, accolades, and made him the 13th overall selection in the 2021 NHL Draft (by the Flames).

He’s never represented the United States at a major tournament – typically the Under-17, Under-18 and Hlinka Gretzky rosters are chock full of National Development Program players – but he’s emerged as one of the more impressive players in his age group.

31 players were invited to the camp, including 17 forwards. 25 players will be part of the final World Junior roster. (The breakdown will likely be 3 goalies, 8 defensemen and 14 forwards.)

The USA Hockey selection camp begins Dec. 12 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The 2022 World Junior Hockey Championship runs Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Edmonton and Red Deer. Team USA is the defending champions, with Flames prospect Dustin Wolf serving as backup goaltender on the gold medal team.
