On the heels of being named the NHL’s rookie of the year for March, Calgary Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau, 21, is now the odds on favorite to take home the Calder Trophy, awarded to the NHL’s rookie of the year, according to on-line sports book bodog.ca.
Read on past the jump.
In addition to securing rookie of the month honours for March, Gaudreau recently leapfrogged past Nashville Predators forward Filip Forsberg, 20, to take sole possession of the rookie scoring race. While Forsberg and the Predators’ top-line have cooled off of late, Gaudreau has continued to fill the net at a dizzying clip for an undersized 21-year-old.
In the month of March, Gaudreau managed to score seven goals while contributing nine assists and recording three multi-point games. In comparison Forsberg scored just two goals in the month of March, while managing only five assists for the flagging Predators.
Here are the full rookie of the year odds, courtesy bodog.ca:
Who will win the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s Rookie of the Year?
Johnny Gaudreau (CAL) 4/7
Filip Forsberg (NAS) 7/4
Mike Hoffman (OTT) 6/1
Aaron Ekblad (FLA) 8/1
With Gaudreau getting hot at the right time and helping to lead the upstart Flames to a probable berth in the Stanley Cup playoffs, it would seem that the Calder Trophy is his to lose. Or at least that’s how the sports books see it.
