In the history of the Flames franchise, 606 players have tugged a red sweater over their heads and suited up for a regular season game. Of those, 22 played just a single game for either the Calgary or Atlanta Flames. We call them One Game Wonders.
Let’s talk about another One Game Wonder, Patrick Sieloff.
A product of Michigan, Sieloff came up through the Detroit-area Compuware system and played his junior hockey for the U.S. National Development Team. He had a chance to play college hockey with Miami (Ohio) Unversity, but instead he headed to the OHL to join the Windsor Spitfires. A physical defender, he was drafted by the Flames in the second round of the 2012 NHL Draft. (The pick was originally Buffalo’s, but the Flames nabbed it by trading down in the first round to draft Mark Jankowski.)
Sieloff spent three years in the Flames’ system. His first pro season was derailed due to a serious staph infection that limited him to two games. He spent time with three AHL teams in three seasons – Abbotsford, Adirondack and Stockton – and got a Game 82 call-up at the tail end of the 2015-16 season. He scored a goal in a 2-1 win over Minnesota.
In the off-season he got traded to Ottawa in exchange for Alex Chiasson. He infamously concussed Clarke McArthur in training camp, though. He was a solid if unspectacular AHLer for the Senators, getting another late season call-up in 2017-18 and scoring another goal – yes, he’s a goal-per-game NHLer – and then getting returned to the minors.
He re-signed with the Senators but has bounced around a bit. He was traded to Anaheim in the middle of the 2018-19 season and traded again to Tampa Bay in 2019-20. He’s remained a perfectly acceptable depth AHLer. He’s a pending Group 6 free agent and it’s unlikely that the Lightning will use a contract up on someone with such limited NHL upside.
But at the very least, Sieloff remains a goal-per-game NHL player.
