Quotable: the Flames lose to the Jets 4-0

2 years agoThe Calgary Flames came into Wednesday’s game needing a win to stay functionally afloat in the playoff race. The Winnipeg Jets came in needing a win. Well, the Jets left town happy with a 4-0 win and a playoff spot cemented, while the Flames are a point lost (or gained by Montreal) away from being totally eliminated.
Here are some selected quotes from the post-game media addresses.
Darryl Sutter
Sutter was pretty blunt with his assessment of what went wrong for the Flames.
100% turnovers. A minute into the game, our second shift, we join the rush and throw the puck… as a defenseman, throw it blind. You can’t do that. You’ve got to shoot it at the net or put it on somebody’s stick. They go down two-on-one, next one’s a turnover breakaway. All four of their goals we have primary assists. Strictly turnover game.
Without naming names, Sutter added that three of the turnovers were from players without much experience – it was Valimaki on the third goals and Nesterov on the first and second – and he didn’t think his team was desperate enough.
Mark Giordano
Giordano shared Sutter’s assessment of the Flames’ shortcomings.
They scored two five-on-five, another shorthanded and a power play. I mean, anytime that happens you really don’t have much of a chance. I think the chances we gave them, breakaways and back door, three-on-one there at the start, you can’t give up those quality chances and expect to win. So, that was in my opinion the difference.
Natural Stat Trick had scoring chances at 22-16 for Calgary, but high-danger chances were 7-3 Jets. Giordano didn’t think his club generated enough looks offensively overall.
Well no, we didn’t score. I thought, they’re obviously a team that likes to pack it in in the neutral zone. They’re tough to get through the neutral zone, we had a game plan. We didn’t execute at times, at other times we got through. And you’ve got to find ways to get to the net, get opportunities. The looks we did have, he made the saves on. We didn’t score, so we didn’t generate enough.
