The Calgary Flames couldn’t bury their chances and were bit, again, but too many turnovers on Monday night. They lost to the Ottawa Senators by a 4-2 score.
Here are some selected quotes from the post-game media addresses.

Milan Lucic

Lucic was credited with Calgary’s second goal, a deflection past Matt Murray. He discussed the team’s playoff hopes post-game.
Montreal lost, I think I saw. So there’s still a little bit of hope but we’ve got to stop hoping and start winning some games.

Darryl Sutter

Sutter was asked what the difference was in the game. (Lucic merely replied “Special teams.”)
I think their defense was a lot quicker than ours. I thought our defense played a really slow game.
The Flames had two full power plays in the third period with the score 2-1 for Ottawa. They had two shots, two shots blocked and a missed shot across four minutes. Sutter was pretty blunt with his assessment of his special teams unit.
Too slow. The power play was too slow. It passed the puck too slow. The same guys that turned the puck over all night were the same guys that turned it over on the power play for the most part. You can’t pass the puck into the net, you have to shoot it into the net. We’ve got guys that didn’t have a shot on goal, probably five or six turnovers, didn’t get a shot on goal. Generally that’s the difference in the hockey game and it certainly was tonight.

The math

The Flames’ magic number was reduced to 17.5 with Montreal’s loss to Edmonton.
The Flames’ tragic number was reduced to 8.5 with their loss to Ottawa.
