In among all the larger Calgary Flames news on Monday, Sportsnet’s Eric Francis revealed a smaller but no less important story. Per Francis, Flames winger Andrew Mangiapane has undergone shoulder surgery.
In 2020-21, Mangiapane scored 18 goals and scored on 19.8% of his shots. In 2021-22, he scored 35 goals and scored on 18.9% of his shots. This past season, he scored 17 goals and scored on just 9.3% of his shots. We’re not saying that this is the entire reason for his dip in productivity, but considering how much of Mangiapane’s game is based upon his ability to drive the net and score goals in specific areas of the ice… it does make a ton of sense.

During Friday’s exit meetings, Mangiapane was non-committal when asked about representing Canada at the World Championships. Well, this could be a big reason. It seems unlikely that he would be going to the Worlds just weeks after shoulder surgery, regardless of how major or minor the surgery’s scope.
Mangiapane has played in every Flames game in each of the past three seasons.
