It is that time of year. Pumpkin Spice has invaded everything in your fridge and/or pantry, the Minnesota Vikings are giving you a new version of the same emotional rollercoaster they always give you, the Blue Jays have recently left you wishing there was always just a little bit more, and you’re in search of something else that you can look forward to on a weekly basis.
Yes folks, it’s fantasy hockey draft season and this year FlamesNation put together a crew – with a few weeds from the neighbouring OilersNation up north – to get together and establish a public league that you can follow along with all season. The draft went by in a flash as all the GMs came ready to try and take the inaugural crown.
It is a 10 team weekly head-to-head league on Yahoo Fantasy with the ability to make roster changes daily – with a max up to 4 additions per week. There are 7 forward slots, 3 defenceman slots, 2 goalie slots, 3 bench slots, 1 short term IR+ slot, and 2 regular IR positions. Scoring sees goals worth 2, assists worth 2, powerplay points worth and additional 1 point, shorthanded points worth an additional 1 point, game winning goals worth an additional 1 point, goalie wins worth 3, goalie losses worth -1, and a shutout nets you a bonus 5 more points.
Now that all the technical mumbo jumbo for the die hard fantasy fans is done lets get to the fun part – the managers and their teams! The players’ handles on X – formerly known as Twitter – will be shared so you can follow along too.

Paige Siewert (@ThatHockeyGirly) – 1st overall – Current Name: Hungry Like the Wolf

Paige mainly covers the Flames AHL affiliate the Calgary Wranglers for the website. She was blessed with the 1st overall pick over our 3 participating OilersNation folks.

ON Brett after Paige took McDavid “That one hurt”

Ryan Pike (@RyanNPike) – 2nd overall – Current Name: The Mighty Pikes

Pike is the fearless leader of the writing crew here at FlamesNation, his love of the game knows no bounds. I swear I didn’t give him the 2nd pick just so I can be invited to sit with the cool kids at the back of the bus.

Pinder’s late round forwards are all sneaky good picks. I can already here him yelling SVECHNIKOOOOVVVVV everytime he lights the lamp.

PJ Parmar (@N/A – escaping the void that is now X) – 4th overall – Current Name: PJs Phenomenal Team

PJ is a staff writer for FlamesNation that helps write prospect reviews and other content. He is also currently at school in the Eastern time zone so he’s very excited the draft went quickly (started at 9:30PM EST).

Cami Kepke (@CamiKepkeGlobal) – 5th overall – Current Name: Cami is trying her best

The incredibly talented Cami Kepke from Global News Calgary was gracious to join us for this draft. She has guest hosted FlamesNation podcast “Just A Game With Rob Kerr” for us and as Pike said mid-draft – we’re all just looking forward to Cami trouncing us.

An absolute quality 1-2 punch on defence with Dahlin and Burns backed up with 2 goaltenders on winning (regular season at least) hockey teams.

Brett Holden (@therealholden40) – 6th overall – Current Name: Dude where’s Makar?

Brett came from OilersNation so feel free to boo him if you want. He’s also affiliated with @TheJaysNation as well so we may have at least one thing to bond about. shared misery brings fellow fans closer together… I think.

Robert Munnich (@RingOfFireCGY) – 7th overall – Current Name: Robert’s Quality Team

13.127 – Cole Caufield MTL (F)
14.134 – Troy Terry ANA (F)

Robert could change his team name to Captain Canada for real: 2 Canucks, 2 Maple Leafs, 2 Canadiens, and 1 Jet. Only 1 person had more, but his were a bit more team specific.

Zach Laing (@Zjlaing) – 8th overall – Current Name: $18M over the cap

Zach is the news director at the Nation Network, he dips in everywhere he is needed. When the draft was only at 8 people he brought in a couple more reinforcements to try and make sure the Flames folks did not have it too easy.

We let the Oilers guy get 2/5ths of the Oilers top PP unit. A letdown on our part for sure. I just hope I play Zach on a week when the Oilers and Lightning have minimal games, those’ll be rough for Zach.

Shane Stevenson (@Flash_33) – 9th overall – Current Name: Do Juuse the Point in Warmups?

Holy crap my defence sucks – oh well I went for a stacked forward group and was blown away I got Saros in the 8th round as the 7th goaltender taken.

Gavin Turinek (@GavinTurinek47) – 10th overall – Current Name: Gavin T’s Groovy Team

Gavin is a producer for OilersNation, DailyFaceoff, and the Senators focused podcast “Coming In Hot.” Judging from his X feed he’s also a Cowboys fan so he’s having a rough week already.

3.30 – William Nylander (F)
4.31 – Sebastian Aho CAR (F)

9.90 – Devon Levi BUF (G)
10.91 – Joonas Korpisalo OTT (G)
11.110 – Kris Letang PIT (D)

13.130 – Jeremy Swayman BOS (G)
14.131 – Jakob Chychrun OTT (D)
15.150 – Vladimir Tarasenko OTT (F)
I think Gavin likes the Senators as he took 6 of them – yes 6! He’s going to struggle when the Sens only play 2 games a week but HE’S ALL IN ON THE SENS WAGON BABY. Former Senator Mark Stone too – respect the commitment.
