The Calgary Flames have qualified for the second round of the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs, and they’ve earned themselves an exciting opponent. For the first time since the 1991 Smythe Division semi-final, the Flames will face the Edmonton Oilers in a post-season edition of the Battle of Alberta.
The Oilers advanced to the second round via a seven game series victory over the Los Angeles Kings, cemented by their victory in Game 7 on Saturday night.
The Flames advanced to the second round via a seven game series victory of their own, defeating the Dallas Stars by way of a Game 7 overtime victory on Sunday night.
It’s the first time these teams have met in the playoffs since 1991.
Here’s the schedule:
  • Game 1: Wednesday, May 18 in Calgary (7:30 p.m. MT)
  • Game 2: Friday, May 20 in Calgary (8:30 p.m. MT)
  • Game 3: Sunday, May 22 in Edmonton (6 p.m. MT)
  • Game 4: Tuesday, May 24 in Edmonton (7:30 p.m. MT)
  • Game 5: Thursday, May 26 in Calgary (if necessary, time TBD)
  • Game 6: Saturday, May 28 in Edmonton (if necessary, time TBD)
  • Game 7: Monday, May 30 in Calgary (if necessary, time TBD)
The Flames played the Oilers four times during the regular season, with each team winning twice. Coincidentally, the home team won every meeting.
The Flames finished first in the Pacific Division with a 50-21-11 record and 111 points. The Oilers finished second in the Pacific Division with a 49-27-6 record and 104 points.
These teams obviously have a heated geographical rivalry, but they’ve also met quite a bit in the post-season during their franchise histories. In five previous playoff series, Edmonton has won four of them and Calgary just one. Edmonton won the 1983 Smythe Division Final (4-1), the 1984 Smythe Division Final (4-3), the 1988 Smythe Final (4-0) and the 1991 Smythe Semi-Final (4-3), while Calgary won the 1986 Smythe Final (4-3).
